The Midwest Conference released the list of 2019-20 Academic All-MWC honorees on Friday and Lake Forest College was represented on the list by a school record 160 individuals.
The criteria to become an Academic All-MWC selection includes a minimum grade point average of 3.33, which is calculated only in the awarded academic year. Student-athletes who letter in any MWC sport are eligible for the award.
The 160 honorees easily surpassed the College's previous record of 131 set in 2017-18 and, added to the Foresters' 25 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic Team members and a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection in women's golf, set Lake Forest's total number of conference academic awards to 186.
Ten Forester seniors — football players Bill Degnan and Johnny Laponte, swimmers Ani Karagianis and Hannah Stinson, women's soccer player Sangjun Hornewer, softball player Haylee Sherlund, and runners Jennifer Bolek, Lauren Giurini, Shelley Parat, and Olivia Parrott — earned the award for the fourth consecutive year. They were among the 33 seniors at the College who finished off their fourth year with a GPA of as least 3.33.
A dozen Lake Forest teams set or tied their respective program's highest output of Academic All-MWC selections and 10 had more than half the roster on the list. Football posted the highest total of honorees with 30, followed by men's soccer with 19 and women's soccer with 17, while women's tennis boasted the highest percentage with all eight members of the team being named Academic All-MWC.
"I continue to be impressed by our student-athletes' performance, both in and out of their competitive venues," began Lake Forest College Interim Director of Athletics Blake Theisen. "To not only set a new record, but far surpass the previous number of academic honors in a year that was upended by the coronavirus pandemic speaks volumes about the character and perseverance of these young men and women. Our department could not be more proud to recognize these achievements and celebrate our continued tradition of athletic and academic excellence."
