The Lake Forest College women's hockey team celebrated Senior Day with a 1-0 overtime victory over Marian University and will host a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinal series next weekend.
The game-winner was provided by two of the Foresters' seven seniors. After the Marian goaltender pushed the puck away to the left of her net, Marissa Gebrauer crossed it back in to fellow forward Samantha Shoebottom, who sent it in from just in front of the crease. It was Shoebottom's team-high 14th goal of the year and she is now tied for the team lead with three game-winners.
The score came less than 30 seconds after Forester senior goaltender Hannah Turnage stopped a breakaway opportunity for the Sabres. Friday's shutout was her third in a row, fourth in the last five games, and fifth this season. She now owns a .945 save percentage and 1.80 goals against average this winter and only one player in program history has more than her eight career shutouts.
Lake Forest had a 42-25 advantage in shots on goal in the contest.
In addition to Gebauer, Shoebottom, and Turnage, fellow seniors Cagla Celik, Karya Dean, Kelly McCullough, and Stokli Ashcraft were honored before their final regular season home game.
The victory raised the Foresters' overall record to 14-7-3 and NCHA mark to 9-4-2 while Marian fell to 8-15-1 overall and 4-11-0 in the league.
The teams will close out their weekend series and the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
