The Lake Forest College women's hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie Saturday afternoon at St. Norbert College, the 15th-ranked team in the nation.
Senior forward Samantha Shoebottom accounted for two of the Foresters' three goals. Her first was assisted by freshman forward Zara Post and senior forward Marissa Gebauer and trimmed the Green Knight lead to 2-1 with three minutes to play in the second period.
The visitors tie the score at the 7:05 mark of the third on the first career goal for freshman forward Macy Gehrke. St. Norbert, however, regained the lead at 10:46.
What turned out to be the official game-tying goal was scored by Shoebottom with just 51 seconds left in regulation and the Foresters playing without a goaltender. Shoebottom redirected a shot from Gebauer into the goal for her team-high ninth goal of the year.
After a scoreless five-minute overtime period secured one point in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings for each team, a three-round shootout decided which squad would get another. Gebauer and sophomore defensmena Abby Meyer were successful for Lake Forest and senior goaltender Hannah Turnage saved two of the Green Knights' three attempts to win it.
Turnage made 29 saves in the contest and turned away 63 of the 68 shots on goal she saw in the weekend series.
Lake Forest is now 8-6-3 overall this season and 3-3-2 in NCHA play. St. Norbert is 13-3-3 overall and 9-0-1 in the league.
The Foresters will host Adrian College, currently the fifth-ranked team in the country, next weekend. Friday night's game will begin at 7:00 and Saturday's at 2:30 p.m. Saturday is also Lake Forest's Alumni Day and the program's Ry McCarthy Award will be presented between the first two periods.
