The Lake Forest College men's hockey team surrendered a late empty net goal and was defeated 3-1 Friday night at St. Norbert College, the ninth-ranked team in the nation.
The Foresters started the scoring at the 7:29 mark of the opening period. The Green Knight goaltender turned away a pair of shots from close range but the puck came out to junior defenseman Connor Scahill, whose shot from the left side of the slot snuck just inside the right post. It was the Scahill's first goal since transferring to Lake Forest for the spring semester. Junior forward Shane Hathaway and freshman forward Chase Freiermuth were credited with assists on the play.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors until the 1:51 mark of the second period and neither team scored again until late in the third.
St. Norbert finally pulled ahead on a power play goal with exactly three minutes to play in the contest. The home team also tacked on an empty net score with 1:02 left to clinch the victory.
Forester senior goalie Nick Wiencek matched his career-high with 43 saves on the night.
The loss dropped Lake Forest's overall record to 6-7-3 and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark to 3-4-2. St. Norbert improved to 10-5-1 overall and 7-2-0 in the league.
The same two teams will face off again at St. Norbert Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
