The Lake Forest College men's hockey team scored at least five goals for the fourth time in five games this season but was defeated 8-5 by Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday.
The Foresters led 2-1 after the opening period thanks to scores by sophomore defenseman Matteas Derraugh and senior forward David Cohen. Derraugh tied the game at the 13:39 mark and Cohen's power play goal at 16:34 was his team-high fourth score of the season.
The teams combined for eight goals in the second period. After the Raiders tied the score just 76 seconds in, Forester freshman forward Colin Bella put the home team back on top at 3:30 and matched Cohen for the team lead in goals.
MSOE regained the lead with two tallies in the next two minutes but the score was knotted again at the 8:39 mark on Derraugh's second of the night.
The Raiders converted a power play opportunity at 10:53 but junior forward Tyler Nielsen, who assisted on both of the first period goals, scored one of his own just 18 seconds later to make it a 5-5 game. Nielsen now has three goals on the young season and his six points are tied with Cohen and Derraugh for team-high honors.
The official game-winning goal was also a power play goal scored by MSOE with 1:31 remaining in the second. The visitors took the first two-goal of the night lead for either team at 3:43 in the third and tacked on an empty netter late in the contest to account for the final score.
MSOE had a 36-30 edge in shots on goal in the contest. The Raiders were 2-for-5 on the power play while the Foresters scored once in eight opportunities with a man advantage.
Lake Forest fell to 2-2-1 overall this season and 0-2-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. MSOE is now 3-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the league.
The Foresters will play a non-conference series at the University of Wisconsin-Stout next Friday and Saturday. Both games will begin at 7:00 p.m.
