The Lake Forest College men's soccer team defeated visiting Grinnell College 2-1 on a goal with just 22.1 seconds remaining in Saturday's Midwest Conference Tournament final.
A throw-in from the left side of the field into the box by Elliot Hull bounced once before reaching fellow junior forward Rayan Khalid, who turned and fired a shot just past the goalkeeper and inside the right post. It was the second game-winner and third goal of the tournament for Khalid, who entered the weekend with just one score in his collegiate career.
The Foresters took the early lead in the game's 30th minute. Freshman forward Mateus Lima drew the foul by the Grinnell goalkeeper in the left side of the box and senior midfielder Teddy Kolesnikov converted the penalty kick opportunity.
The Pioneers, with the wind at their backs for the first half, evened the score five minutes later.
The visitors out-shot the Foresters 7-6 in the game's first 45 minutes and Lake Forest had an 11-4 edge in that category during the second half.
Both goalkeepers played extremely well, combining for 13 saves on the afternoon. Lake Forest's Szymon Mocarski had five, including one on a dive to his left to keep the game tied with less than nine minutes remaining. He is now 7-2-2 with an .836 save percentage and 0.76 goals against average on the year.
The dramatic victory was the second in as many days for the Foresters, who reached the final by scoring two goals in the final minute and one more in the second overtime of Friday's 4-3 semifinal triumph over Knox College.
Along with the MWC Tourney title comes an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament for Lake Forest, which is headed to national postseason play for the fourth time in the last 10 years.
Their opening round opponent and the location of the game will be announced on the NCAA Division III Tournament Selection Show on NCAA.com Monday at 12:30 p.m.
