Important football and men's soccer games between Lake Forest and Chicago highlight this weekend's slate of contests.
The Forester men's soccer team qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament by defeating St. Norbert College 2-1 and Grinnell College 2-0 to win last weekend's Midwest Conference Tournament. The team will be making its third trip to the national playoffs in the last five seasons and will take on host University of Chicago in Saturday's first regional semifinal. Lake Forest enters the NCAA Tournament 12-6-1 while Chicago is 16-2-0. The other semifinal features Dominican University (14-4-0) and Capital University (12-7-0) and the winners will play each other in Sunday's regional final.
In football, Lake Forest hung on for a 28-21 victory at Illinois College on Saturday to secure second place in the MWC South Division standings. The Foresters are now 8-1 overall and finished 4-1 in divisional play. Chicago is 5-4 overall and was one of three teams tied for second place at 3-2 in the North. The Maroons won the tiebreaker and, during MWC Championship Week, will make the short trip to Lake Forest on Saturday for the first time since the 2000 season opener.
The Forester men's hockey team will also play at home this weekend. The team opened Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play with a 5-2 loss at Northland College last Friday and a 1-0 triumph at the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday. Lake Forest is 2-2-0 overall and will host Marian University Friday night and Lawrence University Saturday evening. Both opponents began the season with a win over Trine University and a loss to Adrian College last weekend.
Lake Forest also split a pair of women's hockey games last weekend at Concordia University Wisconsin, taking the opener 8-0 before falling 3-2 in game two. The Foresters are now 1-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the league and will play at Aurora University for the first time this Saturday and Sunday. The Trojans are 0-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the NCHA early in their first season as an NCAA sport.
The Forester cross country teams will also be competing on Saturday. After having the top four women and the top six men in a 3200m time trial at North Park University last Friday, the team will travel to Rock Island, Illinois, to compete in this week's NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships. The Lake Forest women finished 17th and the men 18th at the 2016 regional meet and will be looking to improve on those performances this year.
A busy Saturday will also include the first road trip for the Forester swimming and diving teams, who will compete in the Monmouth Invite. The Lake Forest men and women evened their dual meet record on the season at 1-1 by defeating visiting Carroll University last Saturday. The team's last appearance at the Monmouth Invite was in 2012 and included a Forester sweep of the men's and women's titles in the 10-team event.
