The Lake Forest College men's hockey team scored at least twice in each period and prevailed 7-0 at Lawrence University Friday night.
It was the second career shutout for senior goaltender Nick Wiencek, who stopped all 23 shots on goal he faced in the contest. He has posted a .924 save percentage in the last eight games and is now 6-4-1 on the season.
Seven different Foresters scored in the game, a feat Lake Forest has now accomplished in a 7-0 game twice this season. The first was senior forward Drew Shields, whose fourth of the season came at the 2:03 mark of the opening period. Freshman forward Chase Freiermuth then doubled the visitors' advantage at 15:43 with his first career goal. Shields and Freiermuth also added an assist to their stat lines later in the contest.
The first of Lake Forest's three power play goals was scored by sophomore forward Jared Gerger at 15:08 in the second. It was his seventh score this season. An unassisted tally by junior forward Tyler Nielsen, who raised his goal total on the season to six, made it a four-goal game with 1:26 remaining in the period.
The Vikings committed four minor penalties and a major in the final 20 minutes and the Foresters took advantage. Junior forward Ben Perkins netted a power play goal just 98 seconds into the period with sophomore defenseman Matteas Derraugh collecting his third assist of the night on the play. Senior defenseman Brendan Coughlin converted another power play opportunity at the 12:27 mark and sophomore forward Griffen Sanom closed out the scoring with 2:25 on the clock. Perkins now has three goals on the season, Coughlin one, and Sanom two.
Lake Forest outshot the home team 20-5 in the final period and doubled up the Vikings 46-23 in that category on the night.
The Foresters evened their overall record at 8-8-4 and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark at 5-5-3. Lawrence fell to 3-15-2 overall and 2-11-1 in the league.
Game two of the weekend series will be played in Lake Forest's Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday night at 7:00. It will be the Foresters' Alumni Day and the program's Peter Taylor Award will be presented between the first two periods.
