The Forester women's basketball team dropped a 73-63 decision to Cornell College at home on Saturday.
Junior guard Maurissa Edwards led Lake Forest with a season-high 18 points on the afternoon. She shot 5-for-9 from the field and made seven of eight attempts from the foul line.
Senior guard Katie Neher was next on the team with 14 points and she added nine rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Freshman guard Jamie Springstead, who was making her first start as a Forester, also reached double figures in scoring and set season-highs with 11 points and seven boards.
Lake Forest shot 45.8 percent from the field but was just 4-for-20 from three-point range. The Rams were at just 41.7 percent overall but knocked down 11 three-pointers in 29 attempts.The Foresters out-rebounded their guests 32-28 but committed 29 turnovers while forcing 21.
Cornell scored the game's first six points and were ahead 11-5 before the home team closed out the first quarter with a 9-3 run and began the second by outscoring the Rams 18-7.
Lake Forest led 32-25 at halftime and had a 10-point advantage after Edwards rattled off nine straight points in the third. A 13-2 Cornell run over the next three minutes put the visitors on top and the score was tied at 47 going into the final period.
After the Rams scored 11 of the first 14 points in the fourth, the Foresters closed back to within two at 62-60. Cornell, however, used another 11-3 run to close out the game and secure the 10-point victory.
The loss dropped Lake Forest's overall record to 1-5 and Midwest Conference mark to 0-3. The Rams improved to 3-4 overall with victories in both of their league games.
The Foresters' next two games will be played in Hawaii at the Hoop N Surf Classic. They will take on Luther College on December 18 and Worcester State University the next day.
