The Forester softball team began its Spring Break trip to Florida with an 8-5 victory over the College of Wooster on Monday but fell 2-1 to Westminster College later in the day.
Freshman Kyla Chevalier drove in five runs against Wooster, including three on a home run that made the score 8-4 in the top of the sixth inning. She had also singled in a pair of baserunners during a 5-run rally in the fourth. Chevalier leads Lake Forest with eight runs batted already this season.
Forester freshman third baseman Cadence Dempsey also had two hits in the first game of the day, including a run-scoring double in the fourth. Sophomore shortstop Kaylee Purgatorio drew three walks and scored twice in the contest.
Freshman Kayla Collins pitched the first four innings and became the third Lake Forest pitcher in as many games to earn a victory. Just one of the four runs she allowed in her first career win was earned. Senior Kristen Calhoun got the next four outs and sophomore Hannah Smith the final five for her first save of the year and second as a Forester.
Dempsey accounted for three of Lake Forest's seven base hits against Westminster. Chevalier had one and scored the team's only run of the game on a single by sophomore first baseman Cheyenne Pellettiere in the bottom of the sixth.
The Titans scored an unearned run in the top of the third inning and another in the fourth.
Forester sophomore pitcher Ailee Pederson allowed just six singles and no extra base hits in the game.
Lake Forest is now 3-2 on the young season. Wooster fell to 5-1 and Westminster improved to 4-0.
The Foresters will take on Ramapo College of New Jersey and Lakeland University on Tuesday.
