The Lake Forest College women's hockey team scored four goals in the final period and prevailed 4-0 at Finlandia University on Sunday.
The Foresters outshot the Lions 47-5 during the first two periods but the game was still scoreless with 20 minutes to play. Senior defenseman Karya Dean finally broke that tie at the 8:18 mark of the third. It was her second goal of the weekend and second game-winner this season.
Senior forward Marissa Gebauer, who assisted on Dean's score, added one of her own at 14:36 and converted a power play opportunity at 16:17 to put the game out of reach. She now leads the team with six goals on the season.
Junior defenseman Grace Garby and senior forward Stokli Ashcraft set up Gebauer's second score and Ashcraft earned another assist when Garby netted a power play goal of her own with 6.8 seconds on the clock. It was Garby's second goal of the year.
The final shots on goal count was 69-8 in favor of the Foresters, meaning freshman Goaltender Angie Lombardi needed to make just eight saves to earn a shutout in her first career start.
The third victory of the weekend for Lake Forest raised the team's overall record to 5-3-1 and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark to 2-1-1. Finlandia fell to 0-11-0 overall with six of those losses coming in league play.
The Foresters' next three games will be played in Vermont during the first week of 2023. THey will face off at Castleton University on January 3, Middlebury College on January 4, and Saint Michael's College on January 6.
