The Lake Forest College women's hockey team hosted an defeated Trine University 6-0 Friday afternoon in the opener of their weekend series.
Junior forward Caitlin Dahut started the scoring at the 8:33 mark of the first period. It was her fourth goal of the season and first career game-winner. Senior forward Marissa Gebauer netted her eighth of the year five minutes later and the home team went into the locker room at the first intermission ahead 2-0.
Lake Forest had a slight 9-8 advantage in shots on goal in the game's first 20 minutes and a 17-6 edge in the second stanza. The score remained 2-0, however, for the first 12 minutes of the period. Senior forward Samantha Shoebottom, who assisted on Gebauer's opening period goal, then scored off a Gebauer assist at the 12:07 mark for her team-high 13th tally of the year.
The Forester special teams also got into the act in the second. Freshman forward Emma Sweeney converted a power play opportunity at the 13:15 mark and now has five scores on the season. The team's second shorthanded goal came off the stick of sophomore defenseman Sophia Chapman at 17:07. Sophomore forward Lauren Wensel's steal of the puck and perfect lead pass set up Chapman's first score of the year.
Lake Forest tacked on another power play goal at 6:22 in the third. The score was the second of the season for senior forward Kelly McCullough.
It was the third consecutive game the Foresters had at least six players with a goal.
Senior goaltender Hannah Turnage's busiest period was the first and she finished her third shutout of the season with 20 saves. Turnage now ranks fourth in program history with six career shutouts.
The Foresters improved to 12-7-3 overall this season and to 7-4-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Trine is now 8-13-0 overall and 4-9-0 in the league.
The teams will face off again Saturday afterboon at 2:00.
