Some Foresters are looking to advance this weekend, others are in mid-season form, and one is just getting started.
Action on Friday will begin with the track team's final regular season indoor meet, the Carthage College Final Qualifier. The Foresters will travel just north of the state line and take one more crack at setting personal and program records and perhaps even qualify for national competition indoors. The team is coming off an impressive performance at last weekend's Midwest Conference Championships, where the women placed seventh and the men ninth despite competing in just the distance events.
Friday is also day one of the 2019 NCAA Division III Region 1 Diving Meet at Wabash College. Forester Heath Ogawa, the 2018 National Diver of the Year in Division III, will be looking to qualify for his fourth NCAA Championship Meet but will need to earn that appearance by performing well in Friday's 3-meter competition or off the 1-meter board on Saturday. Ogawa swept the events at last year's regional meet.
The Forester men's basketball team will also be participating in regional competition on Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Lake Forest defeated Grinnell College 99-77 and host St. Norbert College 68-64 at last weekend's MWC Tournament to earn a spot in the national tourney for the first time in program history. The 18-9 Foresters will travel to Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota, to take on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, the fourth-ranked team in the country with a record of 23-3, in round one. Saint John's, ranked eighth in the nation at 23-4, will also host the University of Northwestern (21-6) on Friday and the winners will play in the regional final on Saturday. Lake Forest has not played Oshkosh since 1930 and has never taken on Saint John's or Northwestern.
While men's basketball is in uncharted territory, the Lake Forest women's hockey team finds itself in the semifinals of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Slaats Cup Playoffs for the sixth year in a row after sweeping Trine University in a quarterfinal series last weekend. The Foresters are now 16-6-5 on the year and will take on the College of St. Scholastica (20-6-1) at league champion Adrian College Friday night. The winner will advance to Sunday's tournament final against Adrian (21-4-2), the sixth-ranked team in the nation. Lake Forest was swept by St. Scholastica and earned a victory and tie against Adrian during the regular season.
The Lake Forest softball team has been practicing for weeks and will finally begin its 2019 season indoors on Saturday at the N4C Softball Dome Jamboree in Rosemont, Illinois. The 2018 Foresters were 29-13 overall and claimed their fourth MWC title in the last five years with a 17-1 in league play. One of those 13 losses was to Buena Vista University (21-15) on day one of the season and the Beavers will be Lake Forest's opponent twice on Saturday. The Foresters will also look to avenge a loss from last year against Concordia University Wisconsin (22-16) before taking on Lakeland University (11-25) on Sunday.
While one spring sport is just getting started, another will be competing for the fourth straight weekend. The Forester men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday, falling to host Carthage College and Illinois Institute of Technology. Lake Forest (2-4) will welcome Calvin College, which enters the week 1-1, Saturday evening at the Racquet Club of Lake Bluff. The Knights edged out the Foresters 5-4 in last year's meeting.
