Six Forester teams will be competing in postseason or championship events this weekend.
The Forester handball team will travel to the University of Minnesota for the 2019 United States Handball Association National Collegiate Championships, which will begin Wednesday and continue through Sunday. The Lake Forest men are the event's defending champions while the women placed fourth a year ago. The Foresters were second in the combined team standings. Under Mike Dau '58, the only head coach in school history, Lake Forest has claimed 51 national titles since the program began in 1968.
Additional championship competition will take place Friday and Saturday at Monmouth College, site of the 2019 Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. Lake Forest began fielding a distance only varsity track team last year and is looking for the program's first individual event winner at the league's annual indoor meet.
Friday also marks the beginning of the four-team MWC Basketball Tournaments, which will determine the league's automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Forester men finished their regular season 16-9 overall and in third place in the standings at 12-6 in league play. Lake Forest was defeated 125-119 at Grinnell College last Saturday and will face the Pioneers again in Friday's semifinals at conference champion and tournament host St. Norbert College. Grinnell swept the regular season series and enters the tournament at 19-5 overall and 15-3 in the MWC. The other semifinal features St. Norbert (18-7, 16-2 MWC) and Monmouth College (13-12, 11-7 MWC) with the winners meeting Saturday afternoon in the final.
The Lake Forest women's basketball team clinched a spot in the conference tournament with a 72-54 victory at Grinnell on Saturday and finished the regular season 13-12 overall while matching the men with a 12-6 record and third-place standing in the league. The Foresters will travel to league champion Ripon College for their tournament and take on Monmouth (18-7, 13-5 MWC) in the semifinals on Friday. The regular season series between the Foresters and Fighting Scots was split with the home team taking both contests. Ripon (17-8, 16-2 MWC) will host St. Norbert (11-14, 10-8 MWC) in the other semifinal and the winners will face off in the final on Saturday.
The Forester women's hockey team will also open postseason play on Friday with the opener if the squad's Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Slaats Cup Playoff quarterfinal series against visiting Trine University. Lake Forest dropped a pair of close games at the College of st. Scholastica last weekend to finish the regular season with a 14-6-5 overall record and a mark of 11-3-4 in the league, good for third place in the standings. Trine enters the postseason 10-11-2 overall and is the tournament's #4 seed with a conference record of 8-8-2. Game two of the series will be Saturday afternoon and, should the teams split the games as they did at Trine during the regular season, a decisive 20-minute minigame will be played shortly after Saturday's contest.
A minigame victory sent the Forester men's hockey team to this weekend's semifinal round of the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs. The quarterfinals were last weekend and Lake Forest defeated Aurora University 4-2 at home Friday night before falling 5-1 to the visiting Spartans on Saturday. Their minigame was tied 1-1 after 20 minutes of play and the Foresters scored the game-winner five-and-a-half minutes into the sudden-death overtime period. Lake Forest, which finished second in the NCHA South Division at 9-5-4 in league play, will take its 12-9-6 overall record to Adrian College (19-7-1, 13-4-1 NCHA) for a single-game semifinal on Saturday. The teams split the regular season series with each winning at home, the Foresters 6-0 and the Bulldogs 6-3. This Saturday's winner will advance to the final on March 2.
While the winter sports compete for titles and to keep their seasons alive, the Forester men's tennis team looks to build off of last Saturday's 5-4 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering and 8-1 triumph over Carroll University. Lake Forest is now 2-2 on the young season and will travel to the Life Sport Athletic Club in Racine, Wisconsin, to take on host Carthage College (6-1) Sunday morning and Illinois Institute of Technology (2-5) in the afternoon. The Foresters fell 8-1 to Carthage but defeated Illinois Tech by the same score last spring.
