Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Bob attended Amundsen High School. He lettered in football and baseball and was selected All-City in football.
Entering Lake Forest College in 1936, he earned three letters in
both football and baseball.
A member of the undefeated 1938 football team, Bob, also a member
of Kappa Sigma, was selected captain his senior year. Voted
the team's most valuable player in baseball his junior and senior
seasons, he was also team captain and was named to the Chicago
Tribune All-Star team.
Graduating with a double major in history and education, he entered the U.S. Navy shortly after the start of World War II and served until his honorable discharge in 1945. He then entered the field of education and worked for the Chicago Board of Education as teacher and coach (football and wrestling) for thirty years. For many years until his retirement, Bob officiated football at the high school and collegiate levels.
