On Saturday, February 19, Lake Forest College hosted its eighth annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day event. Thirty-two girls ages 6-14 attended the event and participated in basketball, volleyball, soccer and relay races within the new Sports and Recreation Center.
The girls played trivia games, were taught cheers from the Lake Forest College cheerleaders, and learned the BOOMER chant. After the activities, the girls had center court seats for the women’s basketball 67-57 win over visiting Grinnell College. The women’s basketball team hosted a meet n’ greet autograph session with the girls after the game.
The opportunity that our women’s basketball team had to sign autographs for the young ladies was rewarding for both! We were able to share our passion for the game to those who may one day be able to do the same. I believe that is what mentoring is all about and I felt our team embraced the opportunity to give back and prepare our youth for success in their future endeavors,” said head women’s basketball coach Tam Tills.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day was first recognized by Congress in 1986 to highlight the positive influence that sports have on the lives of women and girls. In NGWSD's 25th year, Lake Forest College is proud to be one of the many institutions to celebrate this important day.
