Chris Roberts grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and attended Walnut Hills High School. He captured three National Junior Singles titles in handball – twice at the 15-and-under level and once at 19-and-under.
Roberts enrolled at Lake Forest College in 1979 and became the third of five All-American handball players in his family, following brothers Vern and Jack and preceding sisters Allison and Jennifer. He was the Foresters’ first four-time national doubles champion, earning a pair of titles with Fran Harvey and two more with Steve Kiser. Roberts also claimed a national title in singles as a senior to become the program’s first player to claim both titles in the same season. In addition to the national honors, he was named the team’s most valuable player his senior year. The Lake Forest men were national champions in 1980 and the Foresters won the combined team title each of the next three seasons.
An economics major at Lake Forest, Roberts graduated cum laude in 1983. He added a master’s degree in finance from Indiana University in 1992 and became an Illinois CPA three years later. His professional career included several positions in financial and accounting systems.
Roberts continued adding to his accomplishments in handball after his time at the College, capturing 17 United States Handball Association Masters championships and four World Masters Doubles titles with his brother Vern. He also coached the sport at the Evanston McGaw YMCA and as a Forester assistant. All three of his children have also played handball at the national level, including his son Maximilian at Lake Forest College.
