Tracy Rainey grew up in Roselle, Illinois, and attended Lake Park High School. She was an all-state softball and basketball player, earned Upstate Eight Conference Player of the Year honors in both sports, and helped lead the Lancer softball team to the state tournament all four years.
Rainey entered Lake Forest College in 2006 and helped lead the Forester softball and basketball teams to more than 150 victories over the next four years. She was a four-time team MVP in softball and played shortstop for every inning of every game during her career. Rainey graduated as the program’s all-time leader with 186 hits, 126 runs, 46 doubles, 136 runs batted in, and 416 assists while her .387 batting average was also among the best in team history. In addition to being a three-time all-region selection, she was named Second Team All-Midwest Conference South Division as a freshman, First Team each of the next three seasons, and the division’s Position Player of the Year as a junior and senior. Lake Forest finished first in the MWC South standings in each of her four seasons and was 41-6 in the league during that span. Rainey was at her best at the conference tournament, batting .500 in 16 career postseason games against the other top programs in the MWC. Also a versatile guard on the Forester basketball team, Rainey was a four-year starter and finished her career with 712 points, 497 rebounds, 123 assists, and 115 steals. She helped lead Lake Forest to a 49-15 record in the MWC and the team claimed a conference championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2007. A leader on and off the field and court, Rainey was a captain in both sports during her junior and senior years.
After graduating from Lake Forest with degrees in communication and psychology, Rainey added a teaching certificate and master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. She went on to a career in teaching and coaching at the high school level.
