Dan Carter is a native of Arlington Heights, Illinois, and attended St. Viator High School. A two-sport athlete all four years, he earned honorable mention all-state honors in football and helped lead the Lions to a regional title in baseball.
Carter enrolled at Lake Forest College in 2006 and became the most accomplished wide receiver in school history. After earning Second Team All-Midwest Conference honors as a freshman, he was a First Team selection each of the next three years and the Foresters’ Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior. Carter took over as the program’s career leader in touchdown catches as a sophomore, receiving yards as a junior, and receptions early in his senior year. He caught three touchdown passes in a game three times, had at least one in 27 of 40 career contests, and finished with 11 in three of his four seasons. His 40 career touchdown catches, 3,422 receiving yards, and 221 receptions were still the highest totals in school history by a wide margin at the time of his induction. He also owned a share of the single-season program record for receptions with 77 as a senior and his 999 yards that fall ranked third in team annals. Dan is one of four Carter brothers to play football at Lake Forest College, joining Mike (2003-04), Kevin (2003-06), and Chris (2008-09).
After graduating from Lake Forest with a degree in business, Carter served as the Foresters’ wide receivers coach for the next two seasons and directed players to all-conference honors and team Most Valuable and Most Improved Player awards. He also played in the Midstates Football League for two seasons and was named the league’s Rookie of the Year in 2012 and Offensive Player of the Year in 2013. Carter went on to a career in transportation logistics.
