Tim Bernero grew up in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, and attended Carmel High School. He played basketball and was an All-East Suburban Catholic Conference selection as a senior.
Bernero entered Lake Forest College in the fall of 1983 and became one of the most prolific scorers in the history of Forester men’s basketball. After averaging 8.5 points as a freshman, he scored 15.7 points per contest and was named Honorable Mention All-Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference his sophomore season. He led the Foresters with 16.4 points per game as a junior and was once again an Honorable Mention All-MCAC selection. In his final season at the College, Bernero scored 20.3 points per game, then the seventh-highest mark in program history, and was named the Foresters’ Most Valuable Player and First Team All-MCAC North Division. He finished his career ranked sixth in team annals with 1,325 points and received the College’s prestigious Nick Wasylik Senior Athletic Award.
Bernero graduated from Lake Forest College in 1987 with a degree in business and began a career in coaching. He served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at four different colleges for a total of 16 years before taking over as the head women’s coach at Carthage College. At the time of his induction, Bernero was easily the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories and owned a career record of 241-135 with several coach of the year awards. His teams had made four trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament, including a pair of appearances in the “Sweet 16” and one in the “Elite 8.”
