Highlights from Home: Softball

The student-athlete experience at Lake Forest College is more than just practice and competition, and this year extends across the country and, in some cases, around the world. Forester teams are like families and their members support each other and the community in numerous ways.

This fall, student-athletes at the College are attending classes remotely, finding ways to keep in touch with one another, and continuing to be active and successful Foresters. The "Highlights from Home" series gives them an opportunity to share their experiences.

The final entry of the Highlights from Home series comes from senior catcher Nicole Schussler of the softball team.

We are so excited to welcome six freshmen and two transfers to the team. We are counting down the days until we are on campus and can finally meet in-person.
Many of us have been coaching teams and teaching lessons, including junior pitcher Meghan Joyce and senior outfielder Erin Karasewski, who are coaching the Illinois Blaze 13u (pictured).
Others have been working to earn extra money during the holidays. Many have been able to spend more time with family and reconnect with old friends.
We have found creative ways to work out and stay active. Junior transfer Carlie Mertz is a group fitness instructor at Orangetheory Fitness.
We are continuing to meet as a team once a week to catch up and get to know one another better. We cannot wait to come together as a family and get to work for this upcoming season.
Happy Holidays!
  - Nicole

Junior Kerry Mullen sent in today's update on the women's swimming and diving team.

The team has been working hard both academically and athletically this semester and we are anxiously awaiting the holiday break.

Over the course of the semester, we've been holding bi-weekly zoom meetings to play games and catch up but are looking forward to when we can get together in person.

Currently, junior Kylie Morgan (pictured) is working on homemade gifts for her family's secret Santa, while freshman Sarah McField (pictured) is excited to do white elephant with her family.
Recently, senior Fallon Longfield (pictured) welcomed teammate Graeme Witte out to her house to celebrate Thanksgiving with her family.
Many of our teammates are working on building their resumes. I recently got a job as a rehab aid to help prepare for physical therapy school applications and junior McKinley Schlepper is continuing her work as a psychology research assistance for Dr. Long.

Senior Brant Christensen submitted today's update on the men's tennis team.

Throughout this tough semester, our team has stayed connected very well. Helping each other on and off the court are some of the key team values.
Over the course of the COVID semester, our team has held team building sessions over Zoom to encourage camaraderie. A handful of us have been living at an apartment complex in Highwood and hanging out throughout the semester.
Every member of the team continues to prepare for what will hopefully be a spring season. Chase, Zach, Oleyski, and Matt continue to hit together indoors each day. While other members of the team, like Jacob Tilton, continue to work out each day to prepare for the spring season in their spare time. With just completing finals, everyone is getting ready for a restful winter break, while continuing to train hard.
Seniors are preparing for plans after graduation. I currently am applying for law enforcement jobs, Matthew Pawlowski plans on attending the college of William and Mary for his graduate program, and Chase Garber plans on looking for a job surrounding his degree in business.
The team looks forward to being back on campus in the Spring!

Today's update on the men's hockey team comes from junior forward Josh Giacomin.

For the third year in a row, during the month of November, the team participated in the "Movember" movement to support and raise awareness for men's health. This annual initiative focuses on raising money for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, suicide prevention, and mental health research. This past month we were able to raise $845, bringing our total to $4,180 since November 2018. Many players take part by growing moustaches in order to encourage more donations and help raise awareness in our communities. Three of us are pictured above, (left to right) myself, Will Lebel, and Kyler Magus.
Sophomore Brendan Coughlin (pictured) has taken his hobby of guitar playing to a new level over the course of the recent months. He just finished his first paid performance two weeks ago in front of 75 people where he performed at a bar in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Brendan has been playing since fifth grade and primarily performs acoustic covers and original music.
Our team has also continued our weekly group meetings via zoom to discuss Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's book How To Be An Antiracist. The goal is to learn more about how to make a positive impact on our campus and in our everyday life. Additionally, we spend some weekly meetings discussing a wide variety of topics, including online classes, professional sports, and current events.
Several more of our players have recently secured new internships and full-time employment – Vaughan Bamford, David Cohen, Sam Lau, Zach Leonard, Max Cavallini, Mark DerManulian, and Boyd DiClemente.
I was able to move down to the Lake Forest area in late October with four teammates, which has been an awesome experience. Working on homework together makes it easier to focus and collaborate as many of us are in the same classes. We were also lucky to play lots of golf when the weather was warmer
As the semester is coming to an end, we are looking forward to getting back to campus in January to start skating and working out as a group, but most importantly, we look forward to spending time with each other and making the spring semester the best we possibly can for our graduating senior class

Today's update on the men's basketball team comes from junior forward Kurt Kozarits.

Every player on the team has been doing his part to stay active wherever he is, and for the lucky few of us in the area we have been able to get together a few times to play. Incoming freshmen Hani Ali and Andre Bennett and I (pictured) were even able to get together during this past month to work out together, it seems like every freshman this year can't stay out of the gym, which is a great sign. I've also been able to play with sophomore Frank Siegien and freshman Val Oplchenski, which has been a blessing considering how busy everyone on the team has been.
It's been great to see in person as well as zoom with my teammates every few weeks to connect with them before we get back on campus, with a big new group this year we are really emphasizing building a strong team culture. We participate in zoom calls together and frequently interact with each other through text and social media. Despite all being in different situations, most of the team share three common things that have been dominating most of our time: school, work, and basketball.
The biggest thing I've focused on with the freshmen is preparing them for life on campus, trying to detail them on different things to look forward to on campus. The subjects vary from basketball related help to school work but also include going to the café early to get an omelet, always a highlight.
As stated before, with most of the basketball team we have been occupied with school, work, and basketball. I've been lucky enough to find a position training kids in basketball during the semester which has me more excited to get back to playing. I've also been working on networking myself online to prepare searching for an internship in the upcoming summer.
For school, we are a very competitive group this year and look forward to excelling in the classroom. Online school has been a unique change in the semester but is necessary in the world we live in today and we have been trying to make the best of it. At this point in the year I think we are all experts on zoom and are working towards finishing the semester strong as a whole team.

Highlights from Home: Women's Hockey

The student-athlete experience at Lake Forest College is more than just practice and competition, and this year extends across the country and, in some cases, around the world. Forester teams are like families and their members support each other and the community in numerous ways.

This fall, student-athletes at the College are attending classes remotely, finding ways to keep in touch with one another, and continuing to be active and successful Foresters. The "Highlights from Home" series gives them an opportunity to share their experiences.

Today's update on the women's hockey team comes from junior defenseman Hannah Kobienia, senior forward Annie Dalton, junior forward Rose Sperry, senior forward Makenzie Kamm, senior defenseman Jordan Trapp, and sophomore forward Cagla Celik.

Hannah: I golfed a lot during the beginning of quarantine but now I mostly spend time with my MANY dogs inside because it is starting to get too cold in Minnesota. I was also able to hang out with my sister in our hometown (Wilmar, Minn.) and look at the Christmas lights.
Annie: I am the proud owner of two new roommates - rescue pups Mazey (almost 2) and Taboo (6). We are living in town with several other members of the team.
Rose: I've been living in Lake Forest all fall, working at a country club with some of the other girls! I've enjoyed my time at the beach, we are so lucky to live so close to it, it's a beautiful running route! I can't wait to see everyone again on campus soon.
Makenzie: On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I have a lift at 5:45 a.m. before my classes. Monday through Friday I have an afternoon training session/lift after my classes and internship finish for the day. The gym I work out at is called Impact Sports Performance, and I have been working with these awesome trainers for the past two years. Before the most recent shut down, I was also skating when I could and working at the same rink. I spent time working in the front office as well as on the ice, serving as a hockey instructor for players of all ages. Since the shut down, I spend more time at Impact, training for the upcoming season and spending more time with my remote internship at Advocate Aurora Health, which deals with the underprivileged and hospitals/healthcare.
Jordan: I coach the Lake Forest High School Girls Hockey Team (Go Scouts!), as well as walk dogs. These jobs encourage me to get up and moving and also lace up my skates occasionally during the pandemic. I turned turned 22 on the 16th of November and my teammates social distantly brought me a cake to celebrate. My roommates Karya and Grace and I are exploring new recipes in our free time. I have also been coaching youth lacrosse in Lake Forest this fall, as well as tutoring for the QRC remotely, which has kept me very busy.
Cagla: First, of course, about hockey: our league and practices here in Turkey are cancelled due to the pandemic. We had two games and the season was over for us so I'm back with no ice. It has been very sad and depressing. I recently decided to cook something new every day (to get my head off from things). Yesterday I tried to bake cookies and today I made some salad and both were delicious!! I have been eating vegetarian for seven months; it has been a whole new experience. I started to go to physiotherapy to help recover from an injury and my leg has been feeling better! I'm doing home workouts since everything is closed and something is better than nothing! I'm spending most of my time at home with my mom and our cats since there is currently a curfew in Turkey. Both of my cats' names have stories. Loki is an orange white cat (Little Orange Kitten) and Blinky has a blind eye. They were adopted a year apart from each other. I will be on the tv on Monday to talk about hockey in Turkey! I'm so excited! Other than that, I'm trying to focus on my academics as best as I can (it's working so far). I'm also applying for internships.

This update on the men's swimming and diving team comes from senior Evan Weller.

Men's swimming and diving has continued to try and stay in shape in various ways. Our team members are swimming, running, lifting and biking in order to stay active. We are remaining optimistic for the opportunity to train and compete in the spring.
Senior Marcus Carter-Buckman, junior Graeme Witte, and I have been training with the Lake Forest Swim Club in order to stay in shape. Practices have been challenging but we are thankful for the opportunity to swim. Additionally, we have been joined by members of the women's swimming and diving team.
Senior Naqi Rizvi has taken up a new hobby, biking. He uses this as a way to stay in shape and spend quality time with his roommates outdoors. He is pictured with his friends in the Wendy's drive-thru (on bikes).
Sophomore Jack Curtis (pictured) has begun to cook for his family. Recently he and his brother decided to make Beef Wellington. His parents gave him rave reviews!
Junior Aaron Helms (pictured) continues to work on his passions. He has been active on streaming sites like Youtube and has a channel that he regularly updates with videos.
The team continues to stay connected in multiple ways. We have weekly zoom meetings, we chat on discord, and regularly update facebook with articles and ted talks on self-improvement.

Senior guard Kelsey Burton sent in the following update on the women's basketball team.

With time getting closer to us returning to campus, we all have been preparing in different ways. Most of us have jobs and are busy, but we all have managed to work out and stay in shape for the upcoming season. Some go to the gyms that are open nearby and others do at-home workouts.
Sophomore Katie Neher has picked up a new hobby, skateboarding (pictured). She also has been practicing her basketball skills by playing pickup at the Y on Tuesday and Thursday Mornings.
When asked about what they are most excited about being on campus for the first time, all of the freshmen had their own ideas. Annie Pulaski said, "so what I'm looking forward to most about being in person is getting to be on campus (physically) as a college student. I also can't wait to meet my classmates and teammates!" Brooke Johnson, Maurissa Edwards, Abigail Pribble, and Olivia Malada are most looking forward to being on campus and meeting new people, as well as finally being able to be around and hang out with their new teammates in person.
Sophomore Annie Lally and juniors Ely Dobrodt, Kara Schoenlein, and Maddie Glennon have been working a ton and working out as much as they can.
Delaney Sjong and I keep in contact every day to make sure our team is well prepared for the upcoming season, as well as preparing for internships and job searches.
Katie Fagan has been in Lake Forest for a while now, but she is looking forward to having her teammates around and being able to socialize with them in person.
We have biweekly zoom team calls to keep up to date with what is going on and to prepare for a successful season.
We all facetime and text each other and keep in touch as much as we can during these busy times. Staying connected is very crucial since we are not in person.

Today's update on men's golf comes from sophomore James Johnson.

For everyone on the team, adjusting to having a full semester of online courses has been a challenge, but so far everyone is powering through it. We are all looking forward to having a week off for Thanksgiving before starting to prepare for finals.
Everyone has been trying to prepare as best they can for the upcoming spring season. Many of the team members have been braving the weather and continue to play and practice at local courses and ranges. With the weather starting to get cooler I have been using my indoor hitting bay pretty much every day.
Carlos Garcia Bodini continues to play at his local course Golf Santander (pictured), which is rated among the top five courses in central Spain. He is also continuing his strength and conditioning training with a professional heavyweight boxer.
In addition to school and golf, many of the team members have jobs as well. I work the pro shop at a local golf course and sneak out to play as much as I can with the weather still being somewhat nice. Jack Dwyer has been working the pro shop at Mission Hills Country Club in Kansas City. Connor Lindley has been working the kitchen at KC's Cabin restaurant. Carlos recently started a job at Decathlon, which is a sporting goods store. Anthony Scaletta continues to run his customized golf ball company.
Jack Dwyer also attended speed networking and has had multiple internship interviews.
Everyone on the team is super excited to get back to campus during the spring and start competing again.

Senior Grace Gould and junior Katie Wegrecki sent in today's update frm women's tennis.

We both moved into apartments in Highwood, Illinois, together starting in August! While it was still warm, we explored different restaurants and cafes while sitting outside.
A highlight of the past couple months has been being able to teach tennis to young kids at the Lake Bluff Park District. We taught every Thursday and Friday outside and were still able to have fun and teach while staying safe.
Since then, we have gone on walks, played tennis, biked, and kept busy with schoolwork.
Grace is currently looking into graduate programs for speech pathology, working hard in classes, and learning how to play the piano!
Katie is focusing on her classes and starting to look at possible jobs/internships to gain experience in occupational therapy! She is also participating in choir and keeping up the ukulele.
We both participated in the last online speed networking event. We made several connections and learned how to create our elevator pitches!
We have gone on a few fun outdoor outings with our teammates that are also living at the apartments such as going to the beach, apple orchard, pumpkin patch, and a day trip walking around Lake Geneva!
Our team has stayed in touch from across the world through several zoom meetings. We all miss each other during this challenging time and can't wait to see each other again safely soon.
Stay safe and go Foresters!

Women's cross country runner Audrey Paglia, a senior, submitted today's update.

Our virtual season has been great so far and has been keeping me busy. I spend most of my time running, completing school work, and nannying!
Usually on Saturday mornings I meet up with local runners to get my long run in for the week. Although it's not the same as practicing with the whole team, it is definitely better than nothing! They have helped me stay motivated.
I have all of my classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays so most of my time is spent on Zoom those two days. I have two kittens that love to cuddle next to me during classes!
Because I have so much free time, around 5-6 days a week I nanny for a newborn, 1 year old, and 9 year old. As an education major I enjoy helping the 9 year old with school work!
As a team we have informal zoom meetings where we study, hangout, and talk running together. I'm grateful I'm able to stay connected with most of my teammates. I'm hoping we'll all be on campus together in the spring.

This update comes from sophomore defender Richard Jinschek and goalkeeper Guiseppe Scalera of the men's soccer team.

Richard: I'll be attending the online speed networking event with a couple other guys on the team.
Guiseppe: This semester being remote has given me the opportunity to work more and continue to save money for when I graduate. Working at a restaurant in these times has taught me to adapt quickly and I have seen firsthand how this virus has affected small businesses and restaurants.
Richard: I will be presenting my summer Richter Scholar research project at the math colloquium.
Guiseppe: School has been going pretty well. I have some teammates in my classes, which makes it easier to succeed in a class because there is always someone I feel comfortable talking to for assignments.
Richard:I was named Employee of the Month of September at work.
Guiseppe: I have been playing soccer a lot recently. I am lucky to have fields not even two minutes away from my house. I typically go with my brother; he practices his shooting while I play goalkeeper.
Richard:I enjoy our team book discussions on Tuesdays.
Guiseppe: The book meetings have gone well. Its nice to see the team once per week and catch up with the guys over zoom. I plan to apply what I have read to my mindset before games and practices.
Richard: I received the John H. and Margaret Veeck Krehbiel Presidential Scholarship.

Today's update on the women's golf team comes from senior Amanda Lee (pictured on left).

For freshmen Makayla Sanchez (right) and Christina Hartley (middle), who are both from California, adjusting to virtual college has had its challenges, but both have been able to adapt and make the most of the experience
Makayla wakes up at 5 a.m. everyday so she can take her classes synchronously, and even woke up at 4:30 a.m. to register for classes for the spring semester.
In addition, the California wildfires were getting very close to her house, but they are now under control, so she is very optimistic about school and home!
Christina has been trying to get involved on campus in different clubs and earned a new position as VP of Operations for the Entrepreneurship Society and is working to make connections with her professors, despite being virtual.
In her free time, she plays Torrey Pines every week and tries to maintain a balanced schedule between class, homework, and getting some fresh air.
As a senior, I have been having an unusually busy semester keeping busy with classes, Athletic Council, and Relay for Life.
Adjusting to virtual college has been very difficult, but I am making the most of it and trying to finish the year strong before studying for the CPA Exam and starting my job next fall.

Sophomore Lionel Whitehead, a member of the men's cross country team, turned in today's update.

I'm currently working for the College as a tutor in the Quantitative Resource Center, tutoring calculus and physics.
This semester I decided to major in mathematics as well as physics.
I recently presented a project I was a part of over the summer at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Colloquium. The goal of the project was to create a simulation of how the virus would spread through campus and investigate what measures could be taken to reduce that spread.
About a month ago, I short play I wrote over the summer about the character of Mercutio from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was produced and performed by the Theater Department.
Having Strava is a great way to stay connected with my teammates through running and to keep each other on the grind.
At the beginning of last season, the team went to Six Flags (pictured) and, as a freshman, it was an important experience for me bonding with my teammates and coach.
I'm looking forward to when we can be safely back on campus.

Today's update is from the football team.

Our Arizona crew continues to work out together on a weekly basis and has had several teammates from outside the state travel out to join them for warm weather and team bonding (pictured).
Seventeen juniors and seniors attended the Career Services Virtual Speed Network hosted on zoom this year. Many have found promising leads and are looking forward to future internships/job opportunities as a result of the event.
Anthony DerManulian just completed an internship with Insurance AUM Journal, where he worked along side long-time Lake Forest College professor Stewart Foley.
A.J. Jackson wrapped up his summer internship with the Leonard Law Firm, where he worked on depositions while learning about case organization and client relationships.
Even without a fall season, members of the Forester football team are being recognized nationally for their individual achievements. Senior John Colasacco has been named a William V. Campbell Trophy Semifinalist as one of the best football scholar-athletes in the country.
Caleb Moore (pictured) continues his pursuit of a career in coaching by interning with TCBoost. There he trains a wide range of athletes, from youth to professional. "I am really enjoying connecting with so many different athletes and helping them reach their fitness goals."
Along the lines of coaching, Forester football alumnus Mike Peters '14, who is currently coaching at NCAA Division I University of Buffalo, has been mentoring a few of the guys on our team who are looking to get into the profession. The Bulls open MAC action this Wednesday here in Illinois. Word has it some other Forester football alumni will be in attendance.
Our players are still staying engaged with each other and their coaches through virtual meetings, text messages, and calls.
And lastly, along with all the classroom work and training, we they are not forgetting to enjoy the comradery that sports bring by doing social meet-ups like golfing or dressing up for Halloween with roommates (pictured).

Women's soccer player Hiwa Brown, a junior defender from Hilo, Hawaii, sent in the following update.

Coach Bell challenged all of us to carve a pumpkin this Halloween season, and submit a picture "in costume" to be judged by his kids. Some of us decided to zoom and carve our pumpkins together. It was really nice to see some of my teammates and be able to catch up with them.
Managing my time has become a must. Because of my location in Hawaii, I have been taking classes asynchronously and it's taken a lot of discipline to stay on top of my work.
One of the perks of being at home for school is that I don't have to deal with the cold weather that is coming fast in states. It's also nice to be able to drive 10 minutes to the beach on hot days.
Thanks to Teambuildr, I can access workouts four times per week. For someone that hates coming up with my own workouts, this has been great for me. (But it will be better when I get to do them with my team.)
I think one of my favorite things is getting a random text from a teammate who just wants to check in and see how I've been. While much of my team is in the Lake Forest area, I still get to stay in contact with many of them. I think they are helping keep me sane.

The following update on the volleyball team was submitted by senior right side hitter Olivia Drevs.

We are a very close group and make time weekly to zoom as a team. During our time together we discuss chapters from John Maxwell's book "17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player." We also have done some fun activities like tie-dying shirts and still continuing our tradition of dressing up for Halloween.
We have also been in touch with many of our alumni. All have had great words of encouragement and stories shared from past experiences as Foresters.
Although most of us are apart, we have been spending time staying connected through our weekly "Treehouse Chats." We talk with two teammates each week and have gotten to know our newcomers to make sure they feel comfortable through these unusual times.
Several team members have been staying in touch with volleyball by playing on their own or coaching local teams. We love to be able to make an impact around our communities and share the sport we love with others.
Many of our upperclassmen are in the process of looking for internships and applying for full-time employment. We are very excited to see what their futures hold and to be part of their continued success.
Throughout our time apart, we have taken the time to reflect and have grown more thankful for the times we've had together. We are very eager to get back on the court and can't wait to see what this spring will bring us.

This update on the softball team was sent in by senior second baseman/pitcher Shaye Gauthier.

Our team is close-knit, and even now we make time to meet on Zoom weekly as a team to have a dialogue about the book we are reading together, The Inner Game of Tennis by W. Tim Gallwey, from a leadership perspective.
Also, we have weekly small group meetings where upper classmen and new players have the opportunity to develop relationships and act as a support system for one another in school, fitness, and beyond.
I am fortunate to live with another Forester softball player, my younger sister Brie, who is a sophomore. We have grown much closer since transitioning to online school and enjoy taking study breaks to get coffee or go thrift shopping.
Several of our upper classmen are in the process of applying for jobs and internships, as well as graduate school. It is a stressful time for many, but we are getting through it together.
One of our junior transfers, Carlie Mertz, has used her time at home to become a certified group fitness instructor at Orangetheory Fitness. She has been enjoying enriching the lives of others through these classes.
Additionally, many of our players coach as a way to stay connected to softball. Not only does it enhance their knowledge of the game, it helps them to empower the next generation of female athletes.
As a team, we are really looking forward to spring, our new season, and utilizing our new turf field (pictured). We are counting down the minutes until we get to see each other and play the game that brought us together.

This fall, student-athletes at the College are attending classes remotely, finding ways to keep in touch with one another, and continuing to be active and successful Foresters. The "Highlights from Home" series gives them an opportunity to share their experiences.

The men's tennis update below comes from senior captain Chase Garber.

Our team is made up of all returning members for the coming season, which has made upholding team values like keeping in contact and holding each other accountable feel very natural.
Every member of the team has been staying focused on tennis and some of us have found more formal ways of playing. Brant Christensen plays in a men's doubles league and Oleksyi Vyshyvanyuk has been competing in tournaments. Others have simply been getting together to hit whenever their schedules allow.
Three members of the team have jobs coaching tennis in the Lake Forest area. Zach Cho is giving lessons to kids and adults at a local country club. Matthew Pawlowski is helping kids grasp the basics of tennis as an instructor at a local tennis camp. Oleksyi Vyshyvanyuk is coaching tournament-level youth players and working to improve member's skill sets at a local country club.
Teammates that are local to the Lake Forest area have been enjoying the reopening of the College's tennis courts. It is common to see four members of the team playing doubles on our home courts. We are grateful for the small sense of normalcy this has brought us during our online semester.
The men's and women's teams have been having periodic zoom meetings to discuss important topics like mental health, diversity, inclusion, and equity. During the height of racial tensions this summer, we drafted a pledge calling for student athletes to be consciously anti-racist. Today, we understand that this pledge is just the groundwork for work that still needs to be accomplished.
The men's and women's teams also met with three recent alumni, Joe Bove, Leeza Bodnar, and Allison Watts, to hear them discuss their transition out of college and into full-time employment. The three of them were able to provide a unique perspective into starting a career, while also discussing the resources at Lake Forest that helped them along the way. This talk was particularly helpful due to the large number of upperclassmen in the tennis programs who will be making a similar transition soon.

Senior forward Aaron O'Neill checks in with this update on the men's hockey team.

Our team is currently participating in small group meetings, some of which are hosted by our coaches and others by team leaders. We will be, and have been, discussing a wide range of topics, from tips/pointers for a remote semester to book discussions surrounding Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's "How to Be an Antiracist."
My fellow teammates have been taking no breaks when it comes to professional experiences, as many have secured internships or jobs while they are studying remotely.
Senior Troy Nelson has recently started an internship at Aerotek Inc. in Schaumburg, Illinois, where he works closely with Lake Forest College alumnus Eric Heidenreich.
Senior Chris Berry has an internship with the Environmental Protection Agency and has also recently begun volunteering as a youth hockey coach for the Washington Little Capitals U16 program.
Junior Josh Giacomin recently accepted an internship with CIBC's Investment Banking division in his hometown of Calgary, Alberta, for the summer of 2021.
I am living in nearby Lake Bluff, Illinois, with three other teammates and have been continuing my internship with Morgan Stanley in Lake Forest. In addition, have been working as an academic advisor at a local hockey academy while also helping remotely, part-time, with the law firm Smolinski Rosario Law, P.C.
Junior Zach Leonard is currently working at Detroit Financial as a retirement planning intern in Birmingham, Michigan.
Sophomore Brendan Coughlin is going to start playing live music at some local bars/restaurants in Hudson, Ohio.
Soon our team will be using a social media app to participate in joint workouts where we can comment, like, and share activities and performance data with each other.

Today's updated on the women's swimming and diving team comes from senior Fallon Longfield.

We have been having meetings with the whole team, as well as grade specific meetings. We have also been in regular contact through our team's Facebook page.
It has been great to reconnect, hang out as a team, and talk about what has been going on in our lives.
We have been keeping in shape by cross training with runs and general lifting, as well as trying to get in as much pool time as possible.
Many member of the team have started new jobs and internships all across the country. McKinley Scheppler (pictured) is doing research with Dr. Long in the Psychology Department.
Some of our teammates have been flying all across the country to visit other team members, such as Ashlyn Pope, who even got in a swim practice during the trip.
Many of us in these trying times have picked up a new hobby and interests. I have been working on my wakeboarding skills over the summer (pictured).
We are all hoping for a safe return back to campus very soon!!!!

Highlights from Home: Men's Basketball

The student-athlete experience at Lake Forest College is more than just practice and competition, and this year extends across the country and, in some cases, around the world. Forester teams are like families and their members support each other and the community in numerous ways.

This fall, student-athletes at the College are attending classes remotely, finding ways to keep in touch with one another, and continuing to be active and successful Foresters. The "Highlights from Home" series gives them an opportunity to share their experiences.

Frank Siegien, a sophomore forward, submitted this update on the men's basketball team.

The team has been able to stay connected in a variety of ways. We have been having team zoom meetings just to keep each other updated, as well as to participate in team bonding activities, such as ice breakers that often turn into lengthy debates over trivial things like the best flavor of Gatorade (which is lime green by the way!).
The team also has a group chat, which is constantly being used to communicate with one another. It has been really helpful for the freshmen, as it allows them to ask a returning Lake Forest College student-athlete about anything to clarify any confusion they have, as well as relieve stress. Most recently, the chat has been used a lot to talk about the NBA playoffs and our favorite teams/players. The group chat is also a good place to go for a laugh whenever you're feeling down, as it is constantly being flooded with memes. Team members have found different ways to stay in shape.
The majority of us have had access to a basketball court or weight room. I was able to get in a lot of workouts during the offseason with senior Michael Drew Jr. (pictured), whether it was conditioning on an outdoor turf field, weightlifting at an LA Fitness in masks, or getting shots up on a nearby court. These workouts were almost always followed by lunch at Culvers!
Freshman Val Oplchenski and junior Kurt Kozarits were able to visit me in my hometown during the summer to play a couple of outdoor pickup games with some of my old high school teammates.
A couple of freshmen on the team have been able to meet as well, such as Andre Bennett and Hani Ali. They're both hard-working guys who seem to be constantly pushing one another in the offseason to get better. I'm excited to see what they will be able to do this season!
We are all doing our best to stay on top of our work, both in the classroom and on the court! Everyone is excited to (hopefully) get back on campus second semester and to start our season!

Junior forward Grace Black and sophomore defenseman Karya Dean provide today's update on the women's hockey team.

Karya: I was able to move back to the area and I am living with my teammates Stokli Ashcraft, Grace Black, and Jordan Trapp (pictured), which has helped make this semester more fun.
Grace: Classes are going well as we learn how to adapt to virtual learning and maintain communication with professors remotely.
Karya: My classes are going great this fall, even with having them entirely remote, and all of my professors have done a great job making classes the best they can be.
Grace: Aside from schoolwork, I have been able to work as a youth lacrosse coach and as a server at Knollwood Club in the evenings.
Karya: I have been coaching youth lacrosse in Lake Forest this fall, as well as tutoring for the QRC remotely, which has kept me very busy.
Grace: Living with three of my teammates has allowed us to stay motivated and hold each other accountable to work hard in our classes.
Karya: I am looking forward to using the new Mohr Field with my teammates in the area to do some cardio to start preparing for the season starting in January (hopefully).
Grace: We're looking forward to the possibility of a season starting in January. The first beginning of winter without hockey feels surreal, but we will be ready to play in a few months!

Senior Stephen Dwyer of the men's swimming and diving team checks in with today's update.

Members of the team were able to stay in shape this summer through various workouts like swimming club, hiking, lifting weights, and body-weight workouts.
Sophomore Jackson Sawyer (pictured on a hike) and I (pictured with family) decided to live in new places to shake things up this semester. Jackson is temporarily in Tennesse and I am in Denver.
Athletes like junior Alec Pittman are staying involved with the sport of swimming and diving by teaching lessons or coaching teams.
Members of the team also focused on some new hobbies, such as senior Thomas Anderson, who worked on his golf game this summer (pictured).
Many of the members of our team started new jobs and internships. Senior Marcus Carter-Buckman (pictured) has been able to intern at an optometrist close to home called Palatine Vision Center. This is another great example of one of our athletes taking steps toward his career goals.
The team has been able to stay connected through the summer and fall by various team zoom calls. We have several calls each month to discuss the team's values, as well as captain-led calls where the team plays games like Pictionary. The team is consistently trying to continue to bond during remote learning.
The men's swimming and diving team is continuing to train with hopes for a chance to compete for a conference title in the spring.

Today's upate on the women's basketball team comes from senior forward Delaney Sjong.

As a team, we have been texting and facetiming each other to keep in touch! We have had team meetings over zoom and one where we used Jamboards to get to know each other better. It was a great way for us to know more about the freshmen while not being able to see each other in person.
Some of us got new jobs during this time away from campus. Kelsey Burton and I (pictured together at last year's speed networking event on campus) have been working at retail stores during our new free time. It is a great way to keep busy and a get a routine during these crazy times.
A few of our juniors have been able to see each other and visit each other on weekends. Kara Schoenlein, Maddie Glennon, and Ely Dobrodt have stayed in great touch and made sure they found some time for a couple little roadtrips.
Two of our sophomores have been recovering flawlessly from their knee surgeries last season. Annie Lally and Katie Fagan have been working out and getting ready for a comeback season! Katie has also been able to find some time to connect with nature before the midwest fall sets in and Annie has been applying to internships during this time.
A lot of our teammates mention that it is sometimes overwhelming to keep up with classes while being online. Some manage their time by making sure they set a schedule and plan their days ahead of time.
One of our teammates even got a job that she has been striving towards. Maggie Kersting has been working as a kindergarten assistant during this semester. She loves kids and has been able to manage her time well with classes and this job!
Some of our freshmen have been getting know each other better by facetiming and texting. They all say they are super excited and ready to be on campus!
A lot of us have been working out any way we can. Maurissa Edwards says that she cycles and goes on runs to stay in shape. Katie Neher has been able to access her local Y to get some shots up.
Overall, our team is doing the best we can with staying ready for the season that is quickly approaching and cannot wait to finally get together!

This fall, student-athletes at the College are attending classes remotely, finding ways to keep in touch with one another, and continuing to be active and successful Foresters. The "Highlights from Home" series gives them an opportunity to share their experiences.

Sophomore Jack Dwyer sent in this update on the men's golf team.

Our returning team of five sophomores welcomed four new freshmen this year: Chris Cho, Ryan Higgins, Tyler Nielsen, and Marty Swab.
Everyone on the team has been working hard on their game in preparation for the spring season. With the weather quickly turning, James Johnson has set up a hitting bay with a flight simulator in his basement (pictured) so he can be ready to go when our season begins.
Along with everyone's individual practice, members of the team have been playing in non-school sponsored tournaments. Carlos Garcia Bodini has placed 1st and 6th in his first two tournaments in the Madrid Golf Association. Similarly, Marty played in the prestigious Wisconsin State Open (pictured).
While these tournament rounds are essential for preparing for next season, friendly rounds that turn competitive are equally important. Multiple team members staying within a few hours of the Lake Forest area, including Carlos, Chris, James, and Connor Lindley met up to play a round.
Along with golf practice, Carlos has been conditioning and strength training by working with a professional boxer and Tyler has been completing golf and hockey workouts.
Carlos and Connor also had the chance to play Whistling Straits Golf Club, which is ranked as the 27th-best course in the country (pictured).
In addition to being busy with classes and homework many members of the team are also working to fill some of their time. Anthony Scaletta has been busy running his customized golf ball business. Ryan has been caddying at Inverness Golf Club. Connor has been working in the kitchen at KC's Cabin restaurant. James has been managing the proshop at Whitnall golf course. Chris has been helping coach his old high school golf team. I have been working in the proshop at Mission Hills Country Club and squeezing in some late evening golf with the club pros.
In addition to school, golf and work, we have been having Zoom meetings to stay in touch with each other, so we get to know one another and build team chemistry.
Everyone on the golf team, including myself, is super excited to get back to campus and can't wait for the season to begin.

Today's update on women's tennis comes from senior Emma Wang.

One of the most fun ways we are trying to stay updated on each other's lives is through the "Take Over Tuesday" segments on the Lake Forest College Tennis Instagram account. It is so fun to see a different member take us through their daily routine!
There are a few members from the women's and men's teams that live near the Lake Forest area. Many of us are rooming with a teammate, which has been a blast!
We are all staying active in our own way. Some of us have been able to consistently play tennis and others have been doing different types of exercise like running, lifting, HIIT, etc. One of my favorite workouts to do since I've been home is yoga sculpt.
Our seniors are staying busy with internships, job applications, and graduate school applications. Although we can't all be together during this exciting time in our lives, we are all trying to support each other from a distance and celebrate one another when opportunities come along.
Every two weeks the team hops on a zoom call with Coach and we focus the discussion on a different topic. This week we had some of our amazing alumnae come and give career advice. It was such a fantastic opportunity to ask questions and for our new players to hear some of our alumnae's' favorite memories.
We try our best to find a time that works with everyone's time zones to get on zoom and catch up. Many of our conversations often circle back to our favorite memories like singing on long road trips, playing at Madison for Midwest Conference, and Spring Break (pictured)!
We are all crossing our fingers about returning to campus and having the opportunity to play together again!

This fall, student-athletes at the College are attending classes remotely, finding ways to keep in touch with one another, and continuing to be active and successful Foresters. The "Highlights from Home" series gives them an opportunity to share their experiences.

Seniors Anna Mollnhuber and Tianna Beilke provide today's update on the women's cross country team.

Tianna: The virtual cross country season has been going well. Coach sends us emails every week with plans moving forward, opportunities to meet as a team via zoom, and even opportunities for those of us who live in the Chicago area to meet up and go on (socially distanced) runs. This constant communication has been really helpful and makes things feel less ambiguous as we work towards training for the Spring!
Anna: It has definitely been a challenge for me to train on my own, but I think there are also advantages to it since as individual runners it is pretty easy to get the work in. Not having a set practice time has allowed me to be more flexible and also enabled me to get my run in when I am motivated to do so. I have also had great fun with mapping out new loops that I can run since it is always fun to explore new areas and neighborhoods.
Tianna: I've personally enjoyed being able to have flexibility with my training schedule. Being able to incorporate new cross-training activities and plan my runs around my schedule has been an integral part of keeping my motivation up. That way, I can have as much fun with the sport as possible!
Anna: My classes have been going great. All my professors have been very helpful with making the transition to a completely remote semester as smooth as possible. The resources have been outstanding – professors have been great with providing all the help I need and it is easy to connect with them if there are questions or concerns. I feel very supported in making this semester a successful one. I am also writing a senior thesis, which is something that definitely challenges me – I am excited to work towards the end product and am thankful for the library staff and my advisor, who are always here to help.
Tianna: I'm very excited about my recent meeting with career counselors as a part of the Forester Game Plan. I was able to work out a plan for having an internship in the spring and applying to some exciting graduate programs for next fall. I'm appreciative of how supportive the Career Advancement Center has been, especially during the remote semester.
Anna: I have also been starting applications for graduate schools next year. Just this past Monday Lake Forest offered a webinar on Zoom with the University of Notre Dame's MSA program and it was great to hear about it from Admissions, as well as a Forester alumnus who currently attends the program. This has been a great opportunity to connect and I am very thankful for those involved who made that event possible.
Tianna: Classes have been going much better than I expected. I never thought of myself as an online learner, but I'm still able to enjoy the same accessibility to my professors as I would on campus - if not even more. The faculty have done an amazing job at moving everything online this semester and their hard work really shows.
Anna: As a team, we try to do informal zoom meetings where we play games or just chat. It is usually super spontaneous but a nice way to keep in touch and find out about how everyone is doing with classes and running.
Tianna: Things are busy, but overall I'm very happy with this semester because I still feel connected to the Forester community and supported by it's members.
Anna: I can say that it has definitely been harder this semester to stay motivated and focused and I miss studying in the library and running with my teammates each day. However, it's great that we are still all connected virtually and I am hoping that we can continue to do so for the remainder of the semester.

A pair of juniors, midfielder Griffin Mitchell and defender Bradley Van Egeren, turned in today's update from men's soccer.

Griffin: This fall has given me the opportunity to learn how to adapt and make the most of every situation.
Bradley: Classes are going well! I'm getting more and more used to my setup each day and working hard to stay motivated.
Griffin: Because we are remote again this semester, I decided to take 5 classes this summer and hopefully graduate early next winter. Despite the sudden increase in my course load, I still feel on top of everything due to the routine I have put myself in.
Bradley: I have been able to find work virtually teaching kids how to code.
Griffin: Working out and studying around the same time everyday helps me organize a daily schedule, but I really do miss being around my teammates. Playing a sport is fun, but being able to travel, train, and share meals with my friends makes the soccer season so special.
Bradley: I don't remember the last time I didn't play soccer in the fall. The part I am saddest about is missing out on all of the experiences I would have had with my teammates and coaches both on the field and off. School is not the same without the camaraderie.
Griffin: While I am not super eager to possibly be playing in the cold months of February and March, I'm excited to see the guys and play on our new turf. My workouts this fall have been going really well but a player next to you can really push you to work harder.
Bradley: Workouts are going well, it's great to have roommates so we can continue to motivate each other! We are more eager than ever to get back on the field and hopefully play in the spring.
Griffin: Outside of school I have been able to coach soccer, which has allowed me to maintain my touch and keep soccer at the front of my brain
Griffin: This fall has really tested my time management, but I believe I will come out of this season a better student and teammate.

Senior Amanda Lee provides today's update on the Forester women's golf team.

We have started a practice plan put together by Coach O'Malley, so all of us are working to keep our golf games up to par!
Members of the team have been busy with jobs this fall. Francesca Carney has been working part-time with an artist renovating homes and businesses. Jordan Trapp has been coaching the Lake Forest High School girl's hockey team and is working at Knollwood Golf Club with Grace Black, who is also coaching lacrosse and walking dogs. Christina Hartley works with childcare at her church and supervises volunteers who make lunches every week at a local shelter in San Diego.
We've also been staying in shape as much as we can. I have been following various PopSugar Fitness videos that have been fun, filled with variety, and most importantly, challenging. Grace Black has been walking or running to Lake Bluff Beach before her classes. Makayla Sanchez has a job at a country club where she is able to work out.
To stay connected, we have been meeting together on Zoom, and recently had a trivia challenge that Coach O'Malley put together.
I had an internship this summer with Porte Brown, a local accounting firm where I will be working next fall. Makenzie Kamm has an internship at Advocate Aurora Health, where she gets to interact with patients of all situations and backgrounds and help them in any way by navigating the often confusing avenues of health care.
So far classes have been going pretty well for everyone, and we are looking forward to hopefully returning in the spring! Makayla Sanchez and Christina Hartley are both in California, so they have been trying to adjust to the time change. In addition, Grace Black has been having tons of fun with her four-hour science labs!
With a relatively new team, we are excited to return to campus, get to know one another, and be able to compete together and bring home some more first place finishes this spring!

Christian: I started working on a career portfolio for internship (and job) applications.
Nathaniel: I'm currently interning on a U.S. senate campaign, as well as a local state representative race.
Christian: I anticipate studying abroad next semester at a location yet to be announced.
Nathaniel: I am coaching cross country at my alma mater, St. Mary's High School in Colorado Springs. We are currently ranked 7th in the state in 2A.
Christian: The team has been meeting at Independence Grove once during the weekend to run together.
Nathaniel: I'm working on my senior thesis for politics and philosophy on the current debate on whether the American right should preserve the liberal aspects of the American revolution or if it should move in a post-liberal direction.
Christian:  I still run and cross train every day to stay in shape for upcoming seasons, although I don't anticipate doing any races this semester.
Nathaniel: Recently, some people on the team have been hopping on Discord and playing Among Us, which has been a welcome distraction.
Christian: Classes have been going well, although all my school-related activities (homework and classes) have been taking place in my room so the repetitive scenery is definitely one of the challenges this fall.
Nathaniel: I'm excited to be back in the spring and see everyone again. When we left for spring break, I don't think any had realized that we wouldn't see everyone again for almost a year.

Today senior defender Maria Perkkio provides an update on the women's soccer team.

We have split into groups of three (each with two veterans and a rookie) so we can keep in touch with our new incoming players. We talk, text, facetime, or zoom at least once a week.
We are lucky in that two-thirds of our team is living in the area now so we make it a point to get together when we can, wearing masks and staying socially distant.
Many of us met at Coach's house one evening and walked to a nearby ice cream shop.
We are doing our best to stay in shape and continue to work out.
Coach has set up two trivia nights so far, the last of which was a "Guess who's pet?"
We hope to be able to continue some of our traditions, like volunteering at Feed My Starving Children (pictured), carving Pumkins, and the Halloween costume contest (pictured).

Today's update on the football team comes from senior running back Ryan Barry

Team captain Jamari Tansmore recently received the Plansoen Scholarship through First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest. The goal of this program is to demonstrate to students the impact they can have through service and the value of being a well-rounded person, combining one's academic education and spiritual development.
Several Arizona Teammates met up at a local high school to work out (pictured). Having the Arizona pipeline gives teammates a great opportunity to get together when they are away from campus.
Florida native Andrew Siren has interviews coming up with JP Morgan, Medline, and Northwestern Mutual. The finance major is looking to obtain internships with elite companies around the U.S. and Chicago.
Recently all junior and senior athletes at the College met with a Career Advancement Center advisor as part of the Forester Game Plan. We discussed post-graduation interests and set the baseline of a plan to achieve our goals over the next couple months.
I was fortunate to meet up with some of my local teammates here in Massachusetts to enjoy the first weekend of college and NFL games.
Caleb Moore is set to graduate in December and pursue his dream of becoming a professional football coach. Recently Caleb and I have been assisting the coaches with their offseason work as preparation for future coaching jobs.
Team captain and all-conference lineman John Colasacco is the first Forester from the class of 2021 to receive a full time job offer (Clune Construction). The offer came as a direct result of his time as an intern with the company the last two summers. It's a great example of the way Lake Forest College students can utilize internship opportunities to create job offers for themselves.
Connor Cahill (pictured), Matt Leonard, and Jordan Briggs have begun their preparation to pursue post-graduate degrees in law. All three players have recently completed internships at law firms.
Players on the team have been finding ways to work on their skills, including Tom Schiller doing quarterback footwork drills in his yard (pictured).

This fall, student-athletes at the College are attending classes remotely, finding ways to keep in touch with one another, and continuing to be active and successful Foresters. The "Highlights from Home" series gives them an opportunity to share their experiences.

Junior defensive specialist Kaity Mueller starts off the series with an update on the volleyball team.

This summer the team stayed in shape by following our own routines and workout plans. Some of us had access to weights and equipment while others utilized bodyweight and at-home workouts.
During quarantine a lot of players found new hobbies and most of the team enjoyed more time outdoors. Haley Bryant and Mary Gegen went on road trips into the mountains of Colorado, Priscilla McGhee traveled to Michigan with her family, and Zana Gradan and I enjoyed time outdoors around our local parks and trails.
Our other teammates kept busy with important jobs and internships. Kelsey Akins worked as a learning assistant for second graders in her area. Isabel Donnelly and Kate Revord held similar positions as remote social media interns — Kate with the nonprofit company Gift of Adoption and Isabel with Kidsbooks Publishing. Izzi Visnjevac was a part of a remote eight-week program with Upkey where she got a chance to see different aspects and fields of business, as well as collaborate with a company on a current project. Hannah Kobienia had the opportunity conduct virtual research with a doctor at Yale about how neurotransmitters contribute to diseases like BPD, depression, and PTSD.
Some of our teammates were able to stay connected to volleyball by coaching local teams. Mary Gegen coached a club team near her home, Olivia Drevs was hired as a JV coach at a local high school, and I began some one-on-one coaching.
Although quarantine made it difficult to connect with our teammates and newer players, we were able to get together over Zoom. I think that, even though we won't be able to see each other this fall, the team can take this time to connect outside of volleyball and form bonds that will translate well on the court.
And while being online for the whole semester presents some complications in our sport, it can also create academic challenges. Olivia Smith and Allyson Richards both mentioned that virtual learning is a challenge because it's harder to maintain a schedule and hold themselves accountable, which is something I and many other students agree with. Madison Stevens and Hannah Nauert note that it's difficult to make connections with professors, classmates, and teammates while online, but Madison and Hannah, as well as the rest of the team, are excited to utilize Zoom and are looking forward to (hopefully) being back in the Forest this spring.
While the team, and everyone at Lake Forest, misses being on campus, we're all driven to make the best of the situation and put in the work needed to come back stronger than ever in the spring!
