End-of-the-season honors abounded this spring with Forester individuals and teams from across all sports earning academic distinctions. Below is a round-up of all the awards earned for the 2020-21 academic year.
Lake Forest College Athletics inducted 90 student-athletes into the school’s first Chi Alpha Sigma class. Chi Alpha Sigma is the first, and only, nonprofit organization that was established to recognize college student-athletes who excel both on and off the field of competition. Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes college student-athletes who participate in a sport at the varsity intercollegiate level, achieve junior academic standing or higher after their fifth full time semester, and earn a 3.4 or higher cumulative grade point average.
A pair of Forester men’s soccer seniors made the list of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) 2020-21 Academic All-District® award winners. Goaltender Jan Roessler and midfielder Joao Godoy were among the 11 NCAA Division III honorees from District 7, which includes schools in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Godoy was also among the CoSIDA 2020-21 Academic All-America® Division III honorees.
Six Lake Forest golfers made the list of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic honorees for 2020-21. Seniors Grace Black, Makenzie Kamm, and Amanda Lee represented the Forester women’s team while sophomores Jack Dwyer, James Johnson, and Anthony Scaletta made the cut for the men. Additionally, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced its 2021 Srixon/Cleveland Golf Division III All-American Scholars, and Dwyer was one of just 147 players to make the list.
The Foresters were recognized as an The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team for the fifth year in a row and had five players named 2020-21 All-America Scholar-Athletes. Forester senior Julie Lord is now a four-time honoree while classmate Tyranny Miller earned her third award. Seniors Emma Wang and Grace Gould and sophomore Natalia Leite made the list for the second time.
The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) honored the men’s and women's swimming and diving teams with Scholar All-America honors for their efforts in the classroom last semester. The teams earned the honor after posting GPAs of 3.19 and 3.7, respectively.
The Lake Forest College men’s basketball team was among those honored for their work in the classroom with a Team Academic Excellence Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches Association (NABC). The awards recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better in 2020-21.
The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association announced the 2020-21 NCHA All-Academic Teams, and the Lake Forest men established a new league record with 22 honorees. Seniors Nolan Carothers, Boyd DiClemente, Kyler Magus, and Aaron O'Neill were recognized for the third consecutive season. Two-year honorees include Forester seniors Mark DerManulian and Joey Sardina and juniors Max Cavallini, Kyle Cote, Josh Giacomin, Will Lebel, and Zach Leonard. Junior Cullen Kane and sophomores Vaughan Bamford, David Cohen, Brendan Coughlin, Ryan Kropp, Sam Lau, Scotty Nicholson, Erik Nilsson, Carson Poulin, Drew Shields, and Nick Wiencek were first-time selections.
The American Hockey Coaches Association also named 20 Foresters as the 2020-21 Krampade All-American Scholars. Aaron O'Neill and Kyler Magus were among those being recognized for the fourth year in a row and Josh Giacomin has made the list following each of his first three seasons as a Forester. Two-time honorees from 2020-21 include seniors Boyd DeClemente, Mark DerManulian, and Nolan Carothers; juniors Cullen Kane and Zach Leonard; and sophomores David Cohen and Drew Shields, and sophomore Scotty Nicholson. Debuting on the list were senior Joey Sardina; juniors Max Cavallini and Will Lebel; sophomores Carson Poulin, Erik Nilsson, Nick Wiencek, and Vaughan Bamford; and freshmen Bailey Brant and Ben Perkins. The 20 honorees are easily the Foresters' highest total in the five years of the award's existence.
The Forester women established a new program record with 13 honorees when the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association announced the 2020-21 NCHA All-Academic Teams. Annie Dalton was recognized for the third consecutive season. Two-year honorees include Forester senior Makenzie Kamm and juniors Grace Black, Emelia Edmondson, Olyvia Opsahl, Megan Truman, and Abigail Tucci. Junior transfer Hannah Kobienia and sophomores Stokli Ashcraft, Cagla Celik, Karya Dean, Iman Shepard, and Hannah Turnage were first-time selections.
Softball was honored with Shaye Gauthier winning the Elite 20 Award; this is given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA in the Conference in their respective sport. Gauthier also earned the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, a $10,000 award given to 42 spring sport student-athletes (21 men and 21 women) across all divisions.
The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the 2021 Division III All-Academic Teams, and the Lake Forest men and women appeared near the top of the list. With a mark of 3.716, the Lake Forest men ranked tied-for-third out of the 162 teams listed while the Forester women's team's cumulative GPA of 3.785 was good for seventh out of 215.
Finally, The Midwest Conference released the list of 2020-21 Academic All-MWC honorees, and Lake Forest College was represented by 38 student-athletes from spring sports. Academic All-MWC selection criteria include a minimum GPA of 3.33 for the respective academic year. Student-athletes who letter in any MWC sport are eligible for the award. (Due to the cancellation of the league's fall and spring sport seasons in 2020-21, only athletes competing in spring sports were eligible this year.)
