Junior forward Olivia Spellmire had a goal and two assists to help lead the Forester women's hockey team, the eighth-ranked team in the nation, to a 7-2 victory over Northland College at home on Sunday.
Spellmire and fellow junior Kayla Griffith assisted freshman Kate Fanning on the game's first goal five minutes into the contest. The power play score was Fanning's fourth goal of the year.
The Foresters had 17 shots on goal without allowing any during the opening period but led by just one at the first intermission.
Spellmire doubled the home team's advantage on another power play goal less than a minute into the second period. It was her fifth score this season and the team's first of five in the period. The official game-winning score went to freshman forward Lexi Morgan just 27 seconds after Spellmire's goal. Morgan, who was assisted by junior defenseman Caroline Campbell, now has three goals on the year. Fanning lit the lamp for the second time in the game and fifth this season at 12:52 with assists credited to freshman forward Sydney Simone and sophomore forward Amy Budde. Simone took over the team lead in points when she and freshman defenseman Amanda Boisjolie set up Campbell's third score of 2016-17 at 15:41. It was Lake Forest's third power play goal of the afternoon and 20th this season. Senior forward Isabel Regine finished off the five-goal period with her second of the year just 27 seconds later. Sophomore forwards Julianne Mauriello and Samantha Wais assisted on the score.
Shot on goal were 19-4 in favor of Lake Forest in the second.
The Forester lead grew to seven when freshman forward Maddie Davis lit the lamp at 12:10 in the third. Griffith and Spellmire assisted her second goal of the season. Northland finally got on the scoreboard 17 seconds after Davis' goal and added a second score 66 seconds later.
Lake Forest put a dozen shots on goal to the LumberJills' nine in the game's final 20 minutes.
Forester junior goaltender Jacqueline Audet tallied 11 saves in the contest and improved to 5-1-0 on the season.
The victory was Lake Forest's third in as many games this weekend and rasied the team's record to 8-2-0. Northland fell to 1-8-0.
After taking next weekend off, the Foresters will host Finlandia University December 2-3. Friday's game will begin at 4:00 p.m. and the teams will be back out on the ice Saturday at noon.
