Five Foresters Named All-American

Five Foresters Named All-American

The American Hockey Coaches Association released the 2016 CCM Hockey NCAA Division III All-American Teams Thursday night and Lake Forest College's Michelle Greeneway, Kayla Griffith, and Allie Carter were First Team West selections while teammates Alex Stensland and Olivia Spellmire were Second Team West honorees.

Greeneway, a senior forward, also received the 2016 Laura Hurd Award, given to the Division III Women's Player of the Year. She leads the nation with a program record 33 goals, matching the fifth-highest single-season total in NCAA Division III history. Eight of her goals were game-winners and she also leads the country in that category while ranking fourth with 47 total points. Greeneway was also a First Team West All-American as a sophomore and earned Second Team honors as a freshman and junior. The Foresters' all-time leading scorer finished her four years ranked tied-for-fourth in NCAA Division III history with 103 career goals and 20 game-winning scores.

Griffith, a sophomore defenseman, finished the season with 20 points on six goals and 14 assists. She tied with Greeneway for third on the team and 11th in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association in assists. Two of her scores came on the power play and one was a game-winner. Griffith had at least one point in 13 contests and now has eight goals and 24 assists for 32 points in her career.

Carter, a senior goaltender, ranks second in the nation with a 1.15 goals against average, ninth with a .945 save percentage, and tied-for-seventh with six shutouts. All three marks are program records, as are her 14 victories (against just four losses and a tie) on the season. Carter surrendered more than two goals in a game just once in 19 appearances and finished as the Foresters' career leader in goals against average (1.61) and save percentage (.929).

Stensland, a senior defenseman, had 19 points this season on eight goals and 11 assists. She ranks fifth in the nation in points by a defenseman and just one player in the country has scored more than her three shorthanded goals. Stensland, who was also a Second Team West All-American as a sophomore, finished her career with 49 assists, which is tied with Greeneway for the third-highest total in team history. She also posted a career plus/minus rating of +87.

Spellmire, a sophomore forward, is fifth in the country with a school record 27 assists and tied-for-11th in the nation with 41 points. Among her 14 goals were five power play scores and three game-winners. She recorded at least one point in 18 of 27 games this season and two or more 13 times. Spellmire is just the third player in program history to surpass 40 points in a season.

It was the first time Lake Forest had more than two All-Americans in the program's 16-year history. The 2015-16 Foresters ranked fourth in the nation in scoring offense (4.00 goals per game) and third in scoring defense (1.22) and they owned the country's second-highest power play percentage (28.2%). The team set a program record with 20 victories against just four losses and three ties and was 15-2-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play.
