Senior forward Michelle Greeneway scored a pair of goals, including the 100th of her career, to help lead the Forester women's hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Marian University at home on Friday. She is just the sixth player in NCAA Division III women's hockey history to reach that milestone.
Greeneway's 100th goal was assisted by sophomore forward Olivia Spellmire and junior defenseman Kayla Griffith and broke a 1-1 tie at the 3:43 mark of the third period. It was her 30th goal of the season, surpassing the team record she set in 2013-14. It also turned out to be her 20th career game-winning score, which ranks tied-for-fourth in NCAA Division III history.
Spellmire added to the home team's lead with her 12th goal of the year just 68 seconds later. Greeneway and senior defenseman Alex Stensland set up the score. Stensland now has 48 helpers in her career, which is tied for third in team annals.
Greeneway struck again with her 31st score of the season at 11:37 with Spellmire and freshman forward Amy Budde assisting. It was Spellmire's 25th assist of the season, tying the school record set by Kim Herring in 2009-10.
The final goal of the game was scored by freshman defenseman Samantha Wais at 16:07. Her second goal of the year was assisted by junior forward Isable Regine.
The four-goal final period followed a scoreless frame for the Foresters in the second. They had taken the early lead on senior forward Holly Lesperance's seventh goal of 2015-16. She was assisted by Griffith at 4:13 in the opening period.
The Sabres scored their only goal of the contest at 13:02 in the second stanza.
Lake Forest senior goaltender Allie Carter made 21 saves in the game, including 10 in the first 20 minutes, to earn her program record 13th victory of the uear against just one loss. She improved her save percentage to .942 and goals against average to 1.07.
In addition to all the individual program records set or tied on Friday, Lake Forest matched the mark for victories as a team. The Foresters are now 19-1-2 overall and 14-0-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Marian fell to 7-15-0 overall and 4-11-0 in the league. The same two teams will face off again at noon on Saturday.
