Senior forward Michelle Greeneway was assisted twice by sophomore forward Olivia Spellmire in the Lake Forest College women's hockey team's 2-1 triumph at the College of St. Scholastica on Friday.
Spellmire gained control of the puck along the boards behind the St. Scholastica goal and passed to Greeneway, who sent it into the net from just in front of the goal to start the scoring at the 16:07 mark of the opening period.
Lake Forest out-shot St. Scholastica 11-8 in the game's first 20 minutes but put just three shots on goal to the Saints' seven in the second period. The Foresters had a 7-5 advantage in that category in the third.
The score remained 1-0 until the home team tied the game four minutes into the final stanza.
Greeneway then scored her team-high fifth game-winning goal of the season and the 17th of her career with 4:20 remaining in the period. It was Greeneway's NCAA Division III-leading 22nd goal of the year and Spellmire, who leads the nation in assists, earned her 19th helper of the season on the play.
The Foresters were assessed a penalty with 2:10 to play in the game and the Saints pulled their goaltender with 47 seconds remaining but the visitors held on for the victory.
Lake Forest senior goalie Allie Carter stopped 19 of 20 shots on goal in the contest and improved to 9-1-0 on the year. She ranked second in the country with a 0.80 goals against average and fourth with a .958 save percentage.
The Foresters, who are ranked fifth in this week's USCHO Poll, improved to 14-1-1 overall and remained perfect in Northern Collegiate Hockey Associaiton play with a league mark of 9-0-0. St. Scholastica fell to 5-8-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the conference.
The same two teams will face off again Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
