Senior goaltender Allie Carter stopped 15 of 16 shots on goal as the Lake Forest College women's hockey team, ranked fifth in the nation, prevailed 3-1 at the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday.
Carter improved to 10-1-0 on the season and she is now tied for fourth in program history with 18 career victories. Carter owns a .956 save percentage and 0.82 goals against average on the season.
The Foresters out-shot St. Scholastica 12-5 in the first period but neither team was able to score. The visitors had a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal in the second and finally got on the scoreboard at the 3:16 mark on senior forward Michelle Greeneway's NCAA Division III-leading 23rd goal of the year. Sophomore forward Olivia Spellmire, who leads the country in assists, recorded her 20th assist of the season on the play.
The Saints put seven shots on goal to Lake Forest's five in the third period and tied the score on a power play goal at 5:24.
The visitors were on the penalty kill later in the period when Greeneway assisted on Spellmire's first career shorthanded goal at 11:20. It was the eighth goal of the year overall and second game-winner for Spellmire.
The St. Scholastica goalie exited the ice with 51 seconds left and Forester senior forward Holly Lesperance got control of the puck and found the empty net 31 seconds later. It was her fifth score of the season.
Lake Forest improved to 15-1-1 overall and 10-0-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Saints fell to 5-9-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the league.
The Foresters will be back at home next weekend against Concordia University Wisconsin. The teams will face off at 7:00 Friday night an again Saturday afternoon at 2:00. Saturday will be Alumni Day and the 2015-16 recipient of the Ry McCarthy Award will be announced between the first and second periods.
