Sophomore defenseman Caroline Campbell scored her first career game-winning goal as the Foresters women's hockey team, ranked third in the nation, defeated visiting St. Mary's University 2-1 on Saturday.
Campbell's second score of the season came with 4:31 remaining in the game and was set up by crisp passes from senior forwards Holly Lesperance and Michelle Greeneway. The play started on the left side, where Lesperance sent the puck to Greeneway on the left side of the goal. Greeneway sent it through the crease to Campbell, who found the right side of the net before the St. Mary's goaltender could slide over to make the save.
There was a goal in each of the three periods, beginning with a St. Mary's score at 13:37 in the first.
Lake Forest tied the game on sophomore defenseman Kayla Griffith's fifth goal of the year at 15:07 in the second. She scored stick side from just above the left circle with assists credited to sophomore forward Leah Ebdon and defenseman Melissa Bodine.
The Foresters out-shot the Cardinals 9-6 in the first period, 15-8 in the second, and 10-5 during the final 20 minutes.
Lake Forest senior goalie Allie Carter made 18 saves on the night and is now 8-1-0 with a .959 save percentage and 0.78 goals against average.
The victory improves the Foresters' record on the year to 12-1-1 while St. Mary's fell to 4-6-2. The same two teams will face off again in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon at 2:00.
