Freshman goaltender Abby Cooper stopped all 14 shots on goal she faced to lead the Lake Forest College women's hockey team to a 4-0 victory at St. Michael's College on Wednesday.
It was the second shutout in the last three starts for Cooper, who is now 4-0-1 with a .925 save percentage and ranks fourth in the nation in goals against average at 0.98.
Forester sophomore forward Leah Ebdon started the scoring with her third goal of the year at 15:03 in the opening period. She was assisted by sophomore forward Amanda Brunges and senior forward Holly Lesperance. Senior forward Michelle Greeneway doubled the visitors' lead with 38 seconds remaining in the period. Freshman forward Amy Budde and sophomore defenseman Melissa Bodine set up the score. Lake Forest out-shot St. Michael's 12-7 in the opening period and led 2-0 after 20 minutes of play.
The Foresters had a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal in the second period and Greeneway struck for the second time in the game and 88th time in her career at 16:38. Sophomore forward Olivia Spellmire assisted on Greeneway's 18th score of the season, which leads the nation.
Spellmire also set up sophomore defenseman Kayla Griffith's fourth goal of the year at 11:41 in the third period. Spellmire regained the national lead with her 16th assist of 2015-16. Lake Forest put a dozen shots on goal to the Purple Knights' four in the period and out-shot the home team 38-14 in the contest.
Lake Forest, the third-ranked team in the nation, will return home with an overall record of 11-1-1. St. Michael's fell to 3-7-1.
The Foresters will host St. Mary's University in a non-conference series this weekend. The teams will face off Saturday night at 7:00 and again at 2:00 Sunday afternoon.
