After winning 10-2 on Friday, the Lake Forest College women;s hockey team prevailed 7-0 at Finlandia University Saturday afternoon. Forester junior defenseman Erin Shamley scored the game's first goal and added a pair of assists for a career-high three points in the contest.
Shamley's second goal of the season turned out to be her first career game-winning score. Sophomore defenseman Alex Stensland assisted on the goal just 38 seconds into the game. Shamley and junior forward Laura Reckdenwald then assisted junior forward Morgan Pope just 16 seconds later, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead after less than a minute of play. It was Pope's career-high eighth goal of the year. The fourth goal of the year for sophomore forward Logan Taylor at the 8:53 mark was assisted by Stensland and sophomore forward Michelle Greeneway and closed out the first period scoring. Lake Forest out-shot the home team 24-2 in the game's first 20 minutes.
Greeneway extended her goal streak to six games at the 6:48 mark of the second period with Shamley and senoir defenseman Sarah Gilbride each picking up an assist. Junior forward Marissa Weber, who recorded her first career hat trick the day before, added to the Forester lead with her sixth goal of the year at 8:31. Weber was assisted by Reckdenwald and sophomore forward Holly Lesperance. Greeneway added her team-high 14th goal of the season at 9:47 with assists credited to Taylor and sophomore forward Melissa Paluch. The Foresters put 15 shots on goal to the Lions' four in the second period.
Lake Forest also out-shot Finlandia 13-5 in the third but Paluch's goal with 5:25 to play was the only score of the period. Stensland recorded her third assist of the day and Taylor her second on the play.
Forester freshman goaltender Casey Hartfiel needed just six saves to hold Finlandia scoreless for the first two periods and fellow freshman goalie Carissa Finck stopped all five shots on goal she faced in the final 20 minutes.
Lake Forest is now 5-3-2 overall and Finlandia 0-8-0. Neither team has played a non-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game.
It was the Foresters final game of the fall semester. They will play their next nine games at home, beginning on Sunday, January 5, at 7:00 p.m. against St. Mary's University.
