Less than 24 hours after falling 4-2 to Adrian College, the Forester women's hockey team defeated the viirardsiting Bulldogs 4-1 Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Morgan Pope scored two of Lake Forest's four goals on the day.
Pope's first score came on the power play and tied the score at one with 1:25 remaining in the second period. She was assisted by junior Emily Wybo and sophomore Alex Stensland.
Adrian had scored its only goal of the contest at the 10:35 mark in the opening period.
Lake Forest took the lead when Stensland set up freshman Allie Girard's first career goal at 4:23 in the third period. Girard and junior Marissa Weber then assisted on a goal by senior Maeve Connelly at 8:29 and Pope tacked on an unassisted score with 2:55 to play in the game.
Adrian had a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal in the first period. The Foresters out-shot the visitors 21-9 in the second and 15-12 in the third.
Lake Forest freshman goaltender Casey Hartfiel made 30 saves in the game to earn her first career victory.
The Bulldogs and Foresters ranked second and third, respectively, in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Preseason Coaches Poll. After splitting the season-opening series with Adrian, Lake Forest will travel to St. Norbert College next weuekend to take on the top team in the league's coaches poll Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
