The Lake Forest College women's hockey team won 10-2 at Finlandia University on Friday. Forester junior forward Marissa Weber and sophomore forward Michelle Greeneway became the first teammates in program history to record hat tricks in the same game.
Weber started the scoring at 16:27 with the only goal of the opening period. She was assisted by sophomore defenseman Alex Stensland.
Lake Forest had an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal in the game's first 20 minutes but led by just one at the first intermission.
The Foresters scored seven times and put 23 shots on target while allowing just one in the second period. Greeneway won the opening face-off and scored off a pass from junior forward Morgan Pope just 16 seconds later. Weber netted an unassisted goal at 5:11 and Pope scored at 9:49 to make the score 4-0. Junior forwards Laura Reckdenwald and Emily Wybo assisted on Pope's seventh goal of the season. Stensland and sophomore forward Logan Taylor assisted on fellow sophomore forward Melissa Paluch's fifth score of the year at 11:52 and Weber completed her first career hat trick just 41 seconds later. Her fifth goal of the season was assisted by sophomore forward Holly Lesperance and freshman forward Allie Girard. Greeneway converted a 5-on-3 opportunity at 18:12 and Wybo tallied the visitors' second power play goal of the game just 23 seconds later. Paluch and senior defenseman Sarah Gilbride assisted Greeneway and Gilbride and Stensland set up Wybo's fourth goal of the season.
The Lions finally got on the scoreboard 30 seconds into the final period. Greeneway's team-high 12th goal of the year finished off her fourth career hat trick at 9:49 with Paluch picking up an assist. After Finlandia scored again at 15:48, Girard accounted for the final goal of the game with 1:59 to play. Her second score of the season was assisted by Taylor and freshman forward Isabel Regine.
Lake Forest outshot the Lions 14-4 in the final period and 48-8 in the contest.
Forester freshman goaltender Casey Hartfiel stopped all four shots on goal she faced in the game's first 40 minutes and fellow freshman goalie Carissa Finck made a pair of saves in the final period in her collegiate debut.
Lake Forest is now 4-3-2 overall and in Northern Collegiate Hockey Associaion play this season. Finlandia fell to 0-7-0, both overall and in the league.
The same two teams will face off again Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
