The Lake Forest College women's hockey team skated to a 6-6 tie at the College of St. Scholastica, the team D3hockey.com ranks seventh in the nation, Friday night. Forester sophomore forward Michelle Greeneway scored three goals in the game, including two in the closing minutes to tie the score.
Greeneway also started the scoring at the 5:06 mark of the opening period with fellow sophomore forward Logan Taylor earning the assist.
St. Scholastica, however, tied the score at the 6:50 mark and took the lead just 45 seconds later.
An unassisted goal by Taylor at 9:26 tied the game again. It was her third score this season. Lake Forest regained the lead when junior forward Emily Wybo converted the only power play opportunity of the first period at 11:53. Fellow junior forwards Morgan Pope and Laura Reckdenwald assisted on Wybo's third goal of the year. It was Pope's sixth straight game with at least one point.
The Foresters had a 12-6 edge in shots on goal in the first period and led 3-2 when the buzzer sounded.
The Saints bounced back and out-shot Lake Forest 18-5 in the second. The home team also tied the game at 2:58, took the lead on a power play goal at 10:19, and extended its advantage with additional second period tallies at 12:56 and 18:57.
Trailing 6-3 going into the third period, the Foresters began their comeback with a power play goal by Reckdenwald at 5:06. Her first goal of the season was assisted by Pope and sophomore defenseman Alex Stansland. The visitors still trailed by two when St. Scholastica was called for a minor penalty with 3:17 remaining. Lake Forest Head Coach Carisa Zaban decided to also pull senior goaltender Stacey Dierking and the move paid of 43 seconds later when Greeneway netted her second score of the contest. Taylor assisted on the play for her second career three-point game. Dierking exited the game again with 1:47 to play and Greeneway scored what proved to be the official game-tying goal 33 seconds later. Greeneway's eighth goal this year completed her third career hat trick. Pope and senior defenseman Sarah Gilbride were each credited with an assist.
The Foresters had 14 shots on goal and the Saints 11 in the third period.
Dierking did not enter her first appearance of the season until the start of the third period and finished the night with 15 saves, including four in overtime.
Lake Forest is now 3-2-2 this year, both overall and in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. St. Scholastica is 5-0-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the league.
The same two teams will face off again Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
