The Lake Forest College men's soccer team prevailed 1-0 in a crucial Midwest Conference match-up at Illinois College on Sunday. Freshman Elyas Ingram scored late in the first half and the Foresters held on for the victory.
An Illinois College goal kick was headed back by Lake Forest senior Max Shaw and caromed forward off a Blueboy defender's head. Ingram chased down the ball and got a piece of it before the goalkeeper could come out and secure it. Senior Kyle Kraus played the loose ball forward to Ingram, whose slide beat an Illinois College defender to the ball and sent it into the net. It was Ingram's team-high fifth goal and third game-winner of the season.
Lake Forest senior goalie Ian Taylor made three saves in the first half and one in the second in his third 1-0 shutout of the season. He improved to 5-7-2 with a 1.02 goals against average on the year. He now has seven career shutouts, tying him for fifth in recorded team history.
The Foresters out-shot the Blueboys 9-7 in the opening period and 16-6 over the game's final 45 minutes. Eleven of Lake Forest's shots were on goal.
Lake Forest is now 6-8-2 overall this year and 5-2-2 in conference play. Illinois College fell to 8-5-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the league. Both teams are still in contention for a spot in the four-team MWC Tournament November 7-8.
The Foresters will travel to Benedictine University for a non-conference game Thursday night at 7:00 before closing out the regular season at home against Knox College on Saturday, November 1. That contest will begin at noon.
