A well-placed corner kick from junior Sam Hillis was headed into the goal with 3:12 remaining in the second half, giving the Midwest Conference champion Foresters a 2-1 victory at Illinois College on Sunday. Lake Forest is now 17-0-0 overall and 9-0-0 in league play this season.
Hillis combined with junior Michelle Greeneway on the game-winning goal, Greeneway's team record ninth of the year and 19th of her career. It was Greeneway's 23rd score this season and she now has 54 points on the year, just one shy of the program record she set in 2013. It was also the 13th assist of the season for Hillis, tying her for the fifth-highest single-season total in team annals. She also moved into sole possession of fifth place in program history with the 27th assist of her career.
The first goal of the contest was scored at the 28:48 mark by Forester junior Holly Lesperance, who gained control of the ball 35 yards from the goal on the right side of the field, sidestepped an opponent, and beat three other Lady Blues before kicking the ball past the goalkeeper from 10 yards out. It was her ninth goal of the season and 35th in her career, tying her for sixth place in team history.
Illinois College tied the score with 20 minutes to play in the game.
Forester sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Tenuta made a pair of saves to raised her record on the season to 13-0-0.
Lake Forest had a 5-3 advantage in shots in the first half before out-shooting the home team 15-5 in the final 45 minutes. The visitors converted on their seventh and final corner kick opportunity in the contest. The Lady Blues had three corner kicks.
Illinois College fell to 9-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference.
The Foresters, ranked 17th in the nation in this week's D3soccer.com poll, will have next weekend off before attempting to finish off a perfect regular season on Saturday, November 1, against visiting Knox College.
