The Forester women's soccer team, behind a hat trick by junior Michelle Greeneway, defeated Carthage College 3-2 at home on Tuesday. Lake Forest is now 2-0-0 on the season.
Greeneway, who began the day with 99 career points, started the scoring at the 25:17 mark on a header off a long pass from the right sideline by senior Michele Giurovici. Greeneway became just the third player in program history to surpass 100 points in her career.
Carthage tied the score exactly five minutes later and it remained 1-1 until the Lady Reds converted a fast break opportunity less than two-and-a-half minutes into the second half.
Another header by Greeneway knotted the score again at 67:12. Sophomore Nina Perkkio played the ball up the right side of the field to junior Holly Lesperance, whose cross carried just over the Lady Red goalkeeper's outstretched arms to Greeneway, who hit the wide open net.
Nifty passing in the middle of the field by Lesperance and junior Ellen Rogers seup the game-winner. Greeneway completed the hat trick with her right foot and Lake Forest held on for the victory.
Forester sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Tenuta, who came out of the goalie box to eliminate multiple scoring opportunities during the game, earned the victory in her season debut.
It was the seventh career hat trick for Greeneway, who has accounted for all five of the Foresters' scores this season. The soccer and hockey player now has 98 career goals in the two sports combined.
Lake Forest raised its record on the season to 2-0-0 while Carthage fell to 0-3-0. The Foresters will travel to St. Paul, Minnestoa, for this weekend's Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Showcase. The team will take on Coe College Friday at 2:00 p.m. and host Macalester College Sunday morning at 11:30.
