The Forester women's soccer team came from behind to defeat visiting Concordia University Wisconsin 2-1 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. Lake Forest sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Kirsch earned the victory in her first career start.
Kirsch finished the contest with a career-high-tying four saves, including three in the first half.
The Falcons netted the game's first goal at the 36:13 mark but the Foresters tied the score less than three minutes later. Sophomore Kyle Chavarria played the ball back to junior Sam Hills along the left sideline and Hillis crossed it high into the box, where junior Michelle Greeneway was there to head it into the goal.
The score remained 1-1 until Greeneway scored the game-winner at the 61:49 mark. Fellow junior Holly Lesperance assisted the score after receiving a long pass on a free kick by Hillis on the left side of the field. Lesperance played the ball to the edge of the box and, after a defender deflected it high into the air, she headed it to Greeneway, who used her left thigh to give the home team the lead.
Greeneway passed Becky Esrock '13 for third place in program history in points. Esrock had 96 in her career and Greeneway's two goals on Saturday gave her 99. She also moved into second place in team history with 11 game-winning goals, one shy of the record and one ahead of Lesperance. Lesperance is now alone in 14th place in team annals with 64 career points.
Lake Forest is now 14-4-0 in season openers and 13-4-1 in home openers under head coach T.R. Bell. The Foresters are 9-6-1 all-time against the Falcons, who had taken the last two meetings.
The Foresters will be back out on Farwell Field again against Carthage College on Tuesday. The game will begin at 4:30 p.m.
