Sophomore Katelyn Hronek scored a pair of goals in the first half of the Lake Forest College women's soccer team's game against visiting Grinnell College on Saturday and the Foresters hung on for a 2-1 victory to remain perfect on the year.
Hronek's first goal was scored just after the Foresters attempted four corner kicks in less than a minute-and-a-half. The fourth opportunity was headed away by a Grinnell defender before it could get to the area in front of the goal. However, the attempt to clear the ball went straight to Kronek, who quickly put the ball in the top-left corner of the goal from 20 yards away at 10:04
Hronek made the score 2-0 on a penalty kick at the 35:40 mark. The Foresters earned the penalty kick opportunity when junior Holly Lesperance dribbled the ball into the left side of the goalie box and was hooked by a Pioneer defender. Hronek kicked the ball just inside the left pole for her third goal of the season. It was her first career multi-goal game.
Lake Forest had a 14-3 advantage in shots and had eight corner kick opportunities in the opening half. The Foresters were unsuccessful on six more corner kicks and out-shot the Pioneers 7-6 in the final 45 minutes but were unable to score again.
The visitors scored their only goal of the game at the 50:43 mark.
Forester sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Tenuta made a pair of saves in the second half and improved to 8-0-0 on the season.
The majority of the game was played in cold and windy conditions with light rain falling.
The Foresters, who are ranked 20th in the nation this week by D3soccer.com, raised its overall record on the year to 12-0-0 and Midwest Conference mark to 4-0-0. Grinnell fell to 6-5-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the league.
Lake Forest will host Cornell College (6-4-1, 2-2-0 MWC) Sunday afternoon at 1:30. The game wil be part of the Foresters' International Soccer Day celebration and serve in part as a kickoff to the College's Global Fest.
