The Lake Forest College women's soccer team clinched its second Midwest Conference championship in the last three years on Saturday by posting a 5-0 victory at Monmouth College. The Foresters are now 16-0-0 overall this season and 8-0-0 in league play.
Junior Ellen Rogers put the Foresters on the scoreboard on a free kick at the 21:30 mark. Her second goal of the season turned out to also be the first official game-winner of her career.
Lake Forest had an 11-2 advantage in shots and put seven of those attempts on goal in the opening period but led by just one after 45 minutes of play. The visitors also out-shot the fighting Scots 10-0 in the second half.
The Foresters put the game out of reach with three goals in less than four minutes early in the second half. Freshman Kayla Wuest started the scoring barrage at 55:43 with her fifth goal of the year and then assisted junior Michelle Greeneway at 58:18. It was Greeneway's team-high 22nd score of the season. Sophomore Nina Perkkio added to the lead just 59 seconds later on her sixth goal of 2014. She was assisted by junior Holly Lesperance.
Freshman Abby Carlson closed out the scoring with 7:19 to play in the contest. Her third goal of the year was assisted by fellow freshman Sami Troost, who recorded her first career point.
Lake Forest sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Tenuta made one save in the team's third straight shutout. Her 12th victory of the season matches her 2013 total and two others for third place in program history. With 24 career wins, she is now alone in fourth place in team annals in that category.
Monmouth fell to 4-11-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the league.
The Foresters' 16 victories this season are one more than the previous team record set by the 1996 squad, which finished 15-3-0. Lake Forest has two more regular season games remaining, beginning Sunday at Illinois College at 1:30 p.m. The Foresters will host Knox College on November 1 and, by virtue of claiming the league title, Lake Forest College will also be the site of the 2014 MWC Tournament November 7-8.
