Lake Forest Leads the Way in MWLC End-of-Season Awards

Lake Forest Leads the Way in MWLC End-of-Season Awards

The Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference announced the 2022 All-MWLC Teams and other annual awards on Thursday and the Foresters figured prominently on the list.

Three of the major awards went to Lake Forest freshman as Calliope Saban was named MWLC Defensive Player of the Year, Jenna Doctor the Attacker of the Year, and Krissy Kuwahara the Rookie of the Year. They were joined as First Team All-MWLC honorees by sophomores Ali Graham and Ryleigh Nelson. Forester freshman Cass Barbera was named Second Team All-MWLC.

Saban led the league with 52 saves, a save percentage of 62.7 percent, and a 6.20 goals against average in five conference games. Lake Forest won all five contests to claim the 2022 MWLC regular season title.

Doctor tied for second in the MWLC with 15 goals during league play. She had a season-high five scores at Cornell College on April 16 and four in the Foresters' 14-9 conference title-clinching triumph over Hamline University on April 29.

Kuwahawa tied for third in the league with 23 draw controls and reached double figures with 10 goals in MWLC games. The midfielder scored four times in the team's first conference game in program history and twice in three other contests.

Graham, another midfielder, filled up the stat sheet on a regular basis. She ranked tied-for-ninth in the conference with 9 goals, fifth with 21 ground ball and a dozen caused turnovers, and sixth with 21 draw controls.

Nelson's eight assists in conference play were just one off the league lead and she also scored eight times against MWLC foes. The midfielder had at least one goal and assist in all five conference games and a hat trick against Wartburg.

Barbera finished the MWLC schedule with a dozen points on 10 goals and 2 assists. She also tied for seventh in the league with 15 ground balls.

In addition to the six Forester players who earned all-conference honors, Lake Forest's Maggie Zentraf was named MWLC Coach of the Year after leading the team to a conference championship in the program's first season as a varsity sport. Junior Emma Tryder was the team's representative on the league's All-Sportsmanship list.

Lake Forest is 11-3 overall and will host Hamline University in the MWLC Tournament final Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
