Lake Forest College's Calliope Saban was named Midwest Women's Lacrosse League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping lead the Foresters to a 14-9 conference title-clinching victory over visiting Hamline University on Friday.
Saban, a freshman goalie, held the Pipers scoreless for the final 12:43 of the game. The Foresters rattled off six goals during that span to pull away and capture the championship in their first year as a varsity sport. Saban also picked up four ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers in the contest.
Easily the league leader in all three categories categories, Saban made 52 saves, stopped 62.7 percent of opponents' shots on goal, and posted a 6.20 goals against average during Lake Forest's five conference games this spring.
MWLC Players of the Week are selected by the league's sports information directors. Lake Forest has now had one of the conference's weekly award winners in six of the last nine weeks.
