The Lake Forest College women's soccer team defeated visiting Grinnell College 3-0 on Friday in the semifinals of the 2012 Midwest Conference Tournament. Forester freshman Michelle Greeneway scored two of the home team's goals and assisted on the other, setting up Saturday's tourney final against St. Norbert College.
Greeneway took over the team lead with her 15th goal of the season just four minutes and 24 seconds into the contest. Senior Lisa Sorensen assisted on what eventually proved to be the official game-winning goal, Greeneway's fourth of the year. It was Sorensen's 26th career assist, moving her into a tie for fifth place in program history. She also ranks sixth with 86 career points.
Fellow Forester freshman Holly Lesperance matched Greeneway with her 15th score of the season at 17:51 with Greeneway picking up the assist.
Lesperance then set up Greeneway with what turned out to be the final goal of the game at 22:42. Greeneway's 16 goals and 40 points this season are both tied for fifth in program history.
Lake Forest had a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first half and a 13-9 edge in the contest.
Forester senior goalkeeper Bri Schleibinger made seven saves for her seventh shutout and 10th scoreless start of the season. She improved her goals against average on the year to 1.08 and save percentage to .818.
Lake Forest is now 13-5-1 this season while the Pioneers fell to 7-9-1.
St. Norbert College, seeded second in the tourney, defeated Monmouth College, the #3 seed, 3-1 in the other semifinal atWaukegan SportsPark. The Foresters will host the Green Knights in the tournament final Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The winner will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
