The Lake Forest College men's hockey team tied host Adrian College, the #7 team in the nation, on Sunday. Sophomore Ben Certo scored the Foresters' third goal of the contest.
Sophomore Luke Swardenski started the scoring with his fourth goal of the season just 96 seconds into the game. He was assisted by freshmen Ian Pichel and Neil Zornow. After Adrian tied the score on a power play goal at 10:06, the visitors regained the lead with 3:01 to play in the opening period. Junior Mike Violette scored the goal, his fifth of the year, and was assisted by junior Andrew Stein and sophomore Bobby Barrett.
Lake Forest outshot the Bulldogs 15-11 in the first period and led 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
Adrian tied the game again at the 3:37 mark of the second period but Certo put the visitors back on top on a power play goal at 18:31. The score was his fifth of the season and was assisted by junior Roberto Caparelli.
The Foresters had a 19-11 edge in shots on goal in the second period and took a 3-2 lead into the third.
Despite out-shooting Adrian 7-6 in the final 20 minutes of regulation, the home team scored the only goal of the period at 5:57.
Lake Forest had four of the seven shots on goal in the scoreless 5-minute overtime, giving the visitors a 45-31 advantage in that category on the afternoon.
Forester senior goaltender Brendan Sullivan made 28 saves to earn the tie.
Lake Forest is now 9-9-3 overall this season and 6-8-2 in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Bulldogs are 17-1-3 overall and 13-0-3 in the league. It was the Foresters' first point against Adrian in 16 all-time meetings.
MCHA play will continue for the Foresters next weekend against Milwaukee School of Engineering. The teams will face off Friday night at 7:00 in Milwaukee and again at the same time in Lake Forest on Saturday. Saturday's game will also include the presentation of the 2013 Peter Taylor Award and the recognition of former Forester head coach Tony Fritz, who will receive the prestigous John MacInnes Award from the American Hockey Coaches Association in May.
