Jason McAloon and Mike Violette scored shorthanded goals less than 30 seconds apart in the first period as the men's hockey team defeated St. Mary's (Minn.) 5-3 on Friday night at the Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
The Cardinals (5-5, 3-1 MIAC) got on the board at 8:12 of the first period on a goal by Nick Nagel and assisted by Brad Denney and Bobby Thompson.
Lake Forest (3-7-2, 1-6-1 MCHA) responded with two shorthanded goals from McAloon and Violoette at 17:03 and 17:31 respectively. McAloon's goal was a one timer from the left faceoff circle and Violette skated in alone on the goalie.
Lake Forest extended its lead to 3-1 at 2:33 of the second period as David Sharpe scored from Alec DeAngelo and McAloon.
St. Mary's came back again with a goal of its own at 13:34 with the Cardinals on the power play to cut the lead 3-2. The Foresters then rattled off two goals exactly two minutes apart at 16:59 and 18:59 from Roberto Caparelli and Sharpe. Sharpe's goal was a poer play goal.
The Cardinals finished out the scoring at 9:06 of the third period for a 5-3 score.
Forester goalie Brendan Sullivan made 28 saves while Jason Horstman stopped 17 shots and Andy Scheib made 12 saves for St. Mary's.
The two teams meet again at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
