The Lake Forest College Athletics Department, in conjunction with the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association (GLASA) is excited to host the third annual "The Sleds Are Coming Again!" event on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of Lake Forest College. NorthShore University HealthSystem will serve as sponsor for the annual event which will take place from 2:30-4:00 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public, but donations are encouraged in order to support GLASA.
The event will seek to incorporate other areas of the campus and greater Lake Forest communities. The Chicago Wolves mascot "Skates" will make an appearance as a special guest.
The purpose of "The Sleds Are Coming" is to bring campus and community exposure to GLASA and showcase its sled hockey program while raising funds for the GLASA Falcons sled hockey team and other GLASA Athletic Programs. The Falcons, coached by retired Lake Forest men's hockey coach Tony Fritz, advanced to the championship game at the 2012 National Disabled Festival in Dallas, Texas.
Fritz, who was inducted into the Lake Forest College Hall of Fame in 2007, was recently named the recipient of the 2013 John MacInnes Award by the American Hockey Coaches Association. The award is given annually to those who have shown a great concern for amateur hockey and youth programs. Fritz served as the Foresters' head men's hockey coach for 32 years (1978-2010).
In addition to the game, there will be raffle prizes, including an iPad mini and four Alumni Box Seats for the April 1st Chicago Blackhawks game, a Chuck-A-Puck competition, and Boomer's Ice Race, featuring Lake Forest College mascot Boomer.
Last year, in its second year, the event raised nearly $5,000 for the organization and had over 400 people in attendance. The competition on the ice consisted of two 15-minute periods of 8-on-8 sled hockey played by members of the GLASA Falcons and several Forester athletes from various sports. This year, the Lake Forest College men's and women's hockey players will face off in two 15-minute periods of 8-on-8 hockey against the GLASA Falcons.
