The Lake Forest College women's hockey team was defeated 3-1 at the University of River Falls on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 2015 NCAA Division III Tournament. The Foresters, who entered the game ranked eighth in the country, finished the season 14-9-3.
River Falls, the third-ranked team in the nation, took the lead on a pair of goals later in the opening period, the first at 15:12 and the second at 18:57. The Falcons had an 11-2 edge in shots on goal in the period.
The Foresters went on the power play at the 2:21 mark of the second period and pulled to within a goal just 31 seconds later. It was the ninth goal of the season for senior forward Morgan Pope and junior forward Michelle Greeneway assisted on the score. The goal moved Pope into fourth place in program history with 83 career points while Greeneway's assist tied her for first place in that category with 105 points in just three seasons.
Both teams had six shots on goal in the second period, which ended with River Falls still leading 2-1.
The home team added an insurance goal a minute and 43 seconds into the third period and the Foresters were unable to mount a comeback. River Falls out-shot the Foresters 15-7 in the final 20 minutes and 32-15 in the game.
Forester junior goaltender Allie Carter tallied 29 saves in the contest and recorded a save percentage above 90 percent for the seventh time in her last eight appearances. Her 2.12 goals against average on the season ranks fifth in program history.
River Falls is now 25-3-1 on the year and will advance to the NCAA Tournament semifinals for the second year in a row.
In addition to Pope, the Foresters will lose fellow seniors Erin Shamley, Emily Wybo, Laura Reckdenwald, Marissa Weber, and Torey Crown to graduation in May. The have helped lead the team to a 61-32-12 record while combining for 309 points on 134 goals and 175 assists over the last four years.
