The Lake Forest College women's hockey team hosted and defeated the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the nation's eighth-ranked team, 5-2 Friday night. Forester junior forward Michelle Greeneway matched her career-high with four points on two goals and two assists in the contest.
It was the fourth career four-point game for Greeneway, who set up fellow junior forward Melissa Paluch 62 seconds into the second period to tie the game at one. It was the sixth goal of the year for Paluch. Greeneway then gave the home team the lead just 15 seconds later with junior defenseman Alex Stensland picking up an assist.
Neither team scored again until the 2:27 mark of the third period when Forester junior forward Holly Lesperance netted the official game-winning goal. The unassisted power play score was her third tally of the season. Lake Forest made the score 4-1 at the 11:53 mark when freshman defenseman Kayla Griffith lit the lamp for the first time in her career. Greeneway was credited with an assist on the play. The Pointers, however, closed back to within two scores at 13:20 and pulled their goaltender after a timeout with 2:53 to play in the period. Greeneway scored her second goal of the night and team-high 10th this season just nine seconds later to account for the final score. Stensland assisted her once again. It was the 62nd career goal for Greeneway, who is now just one shy of the program record of 63 set by Kim Herring in 2012.
Both teams put 25 shots on goal in the game, including nine apiece in the third period.
Forester sophomore goaltender Casey Hartfiel tallied 23 saves in the contest. She improved to 5-1-0 and kept her .919 save percentage on the season.
Lake Forest is now 8-4-2 on the year while Stevens Point fell to 11-5-1. The same two teams will face off again in Alumni Memorial Field House Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
