The Forester women's soccer team won 3-1 at Benedictine University Wednesday night. All three of Lake Forest goals were scored by sophomore Michelle Greeneway, who recorded her third consecutive hat trick.
Greeneway accounted for the only score in the first half on an unassisted goal at 33:30. Her shot from the top of the box made it though the goalkeeper's hands to give the Foresters the lead.
Lake Forest outshot the home team 9-7 in the opening half and Forester freshman goalie Rachel Tenuta stopped the Eagles' only shot on goal. Fellow freshman Caroline Kirsch made three saves in the second half and the visitors had a 13-8 edge in shots during the final 45 minutes.
Greeneway took a cross from freshman Katelyn Hronek and scored again at 56:15 and completed her third straight three-goal game at 73:52. Sophomore Holly Lesperance assisted on Greeneway's 10th goal in the last four contests and team record-tying 20th this year. The season record was originally set by current senior Becky Esrock in 2009. Greeneway's 44 points this year match Sarah Bartz's 1996 total, which ranks third in program history behind Esrock's 47 in 2009 and Melissa Stevenson's record of 51 in 2003. She also moved into eighth place in team history with 84 career points.
It was the final non-conference game of the regular season for the Foresters, who raised their record to 11-4-0. Benedictine, which scored its only goal of the night with seven-and-a-half minutes remaining, fell to 5-10-2.
Lake Forest will host Monmouth College on Saturday and Illinois College on Sunday. Both contests will begin at 11:00 a.m.
