The Lake Forest College women's hockey team was defeated 1-0 by
visiting UW-Superior Friday (March 5) in the semifinals of the
Northern Collegiate Hockey Association O'Brien Cup Tournament. The
Foresters, who entered the week ranked seventh in the nation by
U.S. College Hockey Online and first in the West in the NCAA's
regional ranking, fell to 19-3-4 on the year. The Yellowjackets
advance to tomorrow's tournament championship game with a mark of
18-8-2.
The Foresters out-shot the visitors 8-2 in a scoreless opening
period and 14-4 in the second, another scoreless frame.
Superior put 14 shots on goal to Lake Forest's nine in the third
period and scored the game's only goal with just 28.9 seconds
remaining. The Foresters pulled their goalie for the final 15
seconds but were unable to tied the game.
Just two at-large bids to the seven-team NCAA Tournament are
awarded and they will be announced during a webcast Monday
morning.
If Friday's loss turns out to be the final game of the season for
Lake Forest, sophomore Kim Herring
(Dover, N.H./Groton School) will have led the squad with a team
record 28 goals, 25 assists, and 53 points. The Foresters also set
school records for victories (19) and goals (107) in a season and
their 1.92 goals allowed per game are easily a program best. The
team will lose just three seniors, defensemen Courtney
Bean (Peoria, Ill./Team Illinois), Jamie Sauer
(Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines H.S.), and Carolyn
Thiess (Naperville, Ill./Canterbury School) to graduation in
May.
