The Forester women's hockey team had its season officially come
to an end Monday morning (March 8) as the NCAA announced the
seven-team field for this year's Division III National Championship
Tournament. Lake Forest did not receive one of the tourney's two
at-large bids, which instead went to Plattsburgh State University
of New York and Trinity College in Connecticut.
The 2009-10 Foresters captured their first Northern Collegiate
Hockey Association Championship and hosted last weekend's NCHA
O'Brien Cup Tournament, where they were defeated 1-0 by UW-Superior
in the semifinals.
The team set a program record with a 10-game unbeaten streak to
start the season and accomplished the feat again later in the year.
Lake Forest also established new single-season team records with 19
victories, a .808 winning percentage, 107 goals, 4.1 goals per
game, 50 goals allowed, and just 1.9 goals allowed per contest.
Carisa Zaban earned the program's first NCHA Coach of the Year
Award and sophomore forward Kim Herring
(Dover, N.H./Groton School) was the first Forester to be named NCHA
Player of the Year. Herring leads the nation with 2.04 points per
game (second is 1.67) and ranks among the top five in the country
in both goals and assists per contest. She set team records with 28
goals and 25 assists this season.
Seniors Courtney
Bean (Peoria, Ill./Team Illinois) and Jamie Sauer
(Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines H.S.) joined Herring on the
NCHA's First Team after ranking first and tied-for-second among the
league's defensemen in points with 18 and 17, respectively. Junior
forwards Lynn Switaj
(Avon Lake, Ohio/Ohio Flames) and Melissa
Kravich (Wilmette, Ill./Gustavus Adolphus College) and just
goaltender Alyssa
Wintermute (Belmont, Ontario/St. Thomas Panthers) were
Honorable Mention All-NCHA selections. Switaj tied the program's
previous single-season records with 31 points and 20 assists and
Kravich was next on the squad with 26 points. Wintermute became the
winningest goalie in team history (30 career victories) and fellow
junior goaltender Brittany
Lemke (St. Charles, Ill./St. Mary's University) set a new team
record with a 1.43 goals against average on the year.
Each of the Foresters' 14 regular skaters scored at least one goal
and assisted on two or more scores this season. Eleven players on
the team reached double figures in points and five recorded a
combined eight hat tricks.
